A Native of Greenfield Township, She Had Lived Her Entire Life in This County
Miss Margaret McClure Wadsworth, native of Greenfield Township, who had spent her entire life in Warren County, died at her home, 708 West Ashland Avenue [Indianola, Iowa], last Friday night, June 7, at 9 o’clock. The funeral was held at the Scotch Ridge Church in the vicinity where she grew to womanhood and where the Wadsworth farm is located. Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock in charge of the Rev. Dr. Walter M. Scheuermann, pastor of the Indianola Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Raymond M. Shipman of Des Moines. Interment was in the family lot in the Scotch Ridge churchyard cemetery where her parents and her brother, Bob Wadsworth, lie buried.
Hospitable Home
Miss Wadsworth’s death was not unexpected by her sister, Miss Elizabeth Wadsworth, and her intimate friends. She had been in failing health for several months. Miss Wadsworth’s life is closely associated with the traditions of the Wadsworth family in this county. Her father was a native of Kentucky and he and his family were prominently identified with the growth of Warren County. The Wadsworth home was known for its southern hospitality and in past years Simpson College students always found a welcome there and enjoyed being entertained in the house. Miss Wadsworth, a daughter of B. F. and Elizabeth Thompson Wadsworth, was born May 22, 1860 in Greenfield Township where she lived until she was six years old, or until the death of her mother.
Father Buys Dysart Farm
At the death of her mother, she made her home with her grandparents until 1870, when she went to the home of her father who had purchased the Dysart farm on Scotch Ridge, which came to be widely known as the Wadsworth farm. A part of this farm has never been transferred but once. It was originally entered by David Cummings, bought by Emerson Cumming’s grandfather, and it has never since been out of the family. Miss Wadsworth remained at the farm home until 1904 when she and her sister moved to Indianola. At the early age of six years, she and her brother, Robert Wadsworth, were sent by their father to attend old Bluebird seminary, which later became Simpson College. Homesickness caused her to return to her grandfather’s farm.
One Sister Survives
Afterwards she attended the public school at Scotch Ridge, Des Moines and Seabury Board school, and later Simpson College. Of her father’s family of five children, she is survived by her sister, Miss Elizabeth Wadsworth, also a number of cousins. Indianola Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Wed., June 12, 1940, p.1
