Was First Elected to Office in 1904 and Served Two Terms. Funeral was Sunday
William J. Hewitt, former auditor of Warren County, died at his home last Friday morning at 12:30 o’clock, following an illness which dated back to Easter Sunday when he contracted influenza. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Orr Funeral Home, with the Rev. J. Lewis Bowser, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating. Interment was in the Indianola Cemetery.
Surviving Relatives
Mr. Hewitt is survived by his widow who was formerly Miss Anna Story, daughter of Mr. and Mr. I. K. Story; one son, Dean Hewitt, head clerk in the county treasurer’s office; one sister, Mrs. Nell Judkins, Des Moines, and four brothers, B. C. Hewitt, Indiabnola; Eli and Charles Hewitt, Des Moines; and Walter Hewitt, Sioux City. They were the children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hewitt. Mr. Hewitt was born near Mt. Pleasant on August 28, 1868, and would have been 72 years old his next birthday. He came to Indianola when a child and had lived his entire life here. He was educated in the public schools of Indianola and in March before his graduation, he accepted a position in the post office under Postmaster Billy Worth.
Is Elected Auditor
At one time he was engaged in the grocery business here with Charles Scandland. He served as a clerk in the E. W. Perry, J. H. Whitney and G. E. Johnson dry goods stores. In 1904 he was chosen by his party as the candidate for county auditor and was elected that fall. He served two terms. He kept up an active interest in politics most of his life. In the early twenties he engaged in the dry cleaning business here, retiring to his farm about 1926. Indianola Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Wed., Apr 17, 1940, p. 1
