Mrs. Rosa Hoffarth Gehringer, who would have been 100 years old had she lived until Aug. 30, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rosa McClavy of St. Marys last Saturday, March 16. The funeral was held at the church of the Immaculate Conception at St. Marys Monday morning at 9:00 o’clock in charge of the Rev. Fr. J. J. Judge. Interment was in the Catholic Cemetery at St. Marys. A native of Germany, she had lived in the United States since she was 12 years of age.
70 Years in This Country
She spent 70 years of her life in Warren County and had always enjoyed the best of health. She was active in her home until within 10 days of her death. She had always been interested in the community of St. Marys and active in church and community affairs. Mrs. Gehringer was born in Baden, Germany Aug. 30, 1840, a daughter of Anna Marie Schwartz and August Hoffarth. At the age of 12 years, she and a sister came to this country landing in New Orleans. From the south she moved to Dyersville, Ia., where she spent her young womanhood.
Surviving Relatives
Her husband was Joseph Gehringer who preceded her in death in 1907. Seven children were born to this union: Joseph Gehringer of Mohall, N. D.; Sister M. Jerome of Carlsbad, N. M.; John, Frank and William Gehringer and Mrs. Rosa McClavy of St Marys, and Mrs. Mary Bruggeman of Los Angeles, Calif., who preceded her in death. She also took to raise an orphan child, now Mrs. Rosa Howard of Compton, Calif. Also surviving are 50 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren, and seven great, great grandchildren.

Pallbearers at the funeral were six grandchildren: Louie Gehringer, Melcher; Arthur Gehringer, Des Moines; William Gehringer, Ed Gehringer, Lawrence McClavy and Ed McClavy, all of St. Marys; Ignatius Gehringer of St. Marys and Alphonsus McClavy of Des Moines were honorary pallbearers.
