Henry L. Owens
Henry Lee Owens, youngest child of Hugh and Eliza Elliott Owens, was born near Jackson, Ohio, Aug. 14, 1869. A few months later the family moved to Monmouth, Ill., then in 1871 they moved farther west and settled near Carlisle and this community has been the home of Henry Owens since that time. He attended school in Carlisle and in Des Moines, finishing at a business college. The business training was put to practical use for long years. He was secretary of the school board nearly 50 years, secretary of the Woodman Lodge over 50 years, Carlisle Assessor about 40 years, town clerk and served on the election board many times.
In 1899 he was united in marriage with Miss Nona Keeney of Avon and to this union were born one daughter and four sons. He operated the Carlisle Creamery for several years. In 1911 the wife and mother died and Henry Owens became both father and mother to his children, his devotion being well known. He was an interior decorator and construction worker. In 1923 he married Lacelia Anderson Wade whose son, Bill, was like his own. From Welsh and English ancestry, Mr. Owens inherited musical talent and he enjoyed the choir and the local band. He was a member of the Carlisle Methodist Church.
He died at his home Feb. 24, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 10 days and was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Owens, three sisters, Mrs. D. F. Souders, Mrs. C. J. Lynch and Mrs. Wes Patterson, and step-son and a granddaughter, Frances Foulke.
He is survived by his wife, his children, Mrs. Webb Foulke, Russell, Jarvis and Osborne, all of Carlisle, and Perry of Hartford, two granddaughters, Mrs. Will Kauffman and Myrna Owens, five grandsons, Joe Foulke, Jarvis Lee, Arden, Mack and Lynn Owens; two great-granddaughters, and one great-grandson; his eldest brother, Arthur Owens, and a host of relatives and friends.
