Kathy Lynn Veatch, 57, of 322 W. Williams St., went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at 7:15 p.m. March 5, 2011. She was born on May 10, 1953, in Ottumwa to Keith and Bernice Warner Hewitt. She was a graduate of Davis County High School. Upon graduation, she married Richard Schlotter on Oct. 31, 1971. Together they had four children that were Kathy’s heart and soul. They later divorced, and she remarried David Veatch on Sept. 11, 1992. He preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1999. A graduate from Indian Hills Community College, she earned a degree as an RN. She worked in the nursing profession for many years. She loved caring for people.
A resident of Ottumwa all of her life, she operated a day care at her house for the last several years. During that time she was privileged to care for numerous young children that she loved very much. Her passion in life was her children and grandchildren. She devoted her life to caring for them. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, going to church and gardening. She was a foster mother. She was gifted in working with children. Over the years, she helped many children by loving and caring for them. Her home was a place that was always filled with kids. That was exactly how she wanted it.
She was a member of First Pentecostal Assembly of God. She is survived by her parents, Keith and Cathy Hewitt of Floris, and mother, Bernice Hinton of Ottumwa; six children, Tara (Rod) Kenney, Julie (Shane) Frazier, Richard (Kelly) Schlotter, Nathan (Amy) Schlotter, David Veatch and Norah Veatch, all of Ottumwa; her siblings, Gary (Cindy) Hewitt of Colfax, Danise Schweer of Waverly, Kenny Hewitt, Sherry (Darrell) Jackson, Kevin Hewitt, Karla Hinton and Carla (Ron) Thompson, all of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren, Brooklynne and Carson Kenney, Shane and Lilly Frazier, Richard, Wyatt, Vivian and Isabella Schlotter, Madisyn and Nicholas Schlotter, and Alex and Mazy Leon; many nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Veatch, and second father, Karle Hinton.
Her body has been cremated. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the First Pentecostal Assembly of God. Her son, Rev. Richard Schlotter, and son-in-law, Rev. Shane Frazier, will be officiating. Inurnment will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Bloomfield. Memorials may be made to the family for David and Norah Veatch’s college fund. Reece Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
