Opal Sparks

Opal Sparks, 93, of Cantril died at a.m. Thursday, July 1, 1993 at the home of her nephew, Wayne Hervey of Cantril, where she had lived the past eight years. She was born April 7, 1900 near Mt. Sterling to James and Mae Parsons Hervey. She married Gerald Sparks August 9, 1924. He died June 29, 1974. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls and taught Indian Creek and Willits Station rural schools in Van Buren County. She and her husband farmed near Keosauqua and Mt. Sterling and operated grocery stores in Cantril and Mt. Sterling and a frozen food locker plant in Keosauqua. Surviving are a brother, Dean Hervey, Cantril, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Creola Beggs and Bernice Regur.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, Reverend Gerald Caughron officiating. Burial will be in Harness Cemetery, Mt. Sterling. Open visitation will begin at noon Friday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Cantril Public Library building fund may be left at the funeral home.
