Martin Oosthoek

Martin H. Oosthoek, 87, 401 West Madison Ave., Fairfield died at 8 a.m. July 26, 1993, at Nelson Nursing Home.

He was born Sept. 2, 1905, near Kilbourne to John and Bertha Slutts Oosthoek. He married Lena Van Der Werff on March 18, 1937, in Fairfield.

He was a farmer and lived in Van Buren County most of his life. He also had been employed as a maintenance worker for Free Methodist College at Wessington Springs, S.D., for five years. He and his wife moved to Fairfield in 1983. He was a member of Birmingham Free Methodist Church, and was formerly active in the Gideon Society.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Dean of Fairfield; three daughters, Donna Cowen of Birmingham, Marlene Wibben of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Marie Harwood of Mount Pleasant; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, and a sister, Stella Hendricks Bennett of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harvey, a sister, May Moore, and a granddaughter.

The service was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 1993 at Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham, the Revs. Donald Hickman and Bruce Scherbarth officiating. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery north of Douds.

Memorials may be made to Birmingham Free Methodist Church.
