Dean W. Topping, 67, dies

BIRMINGHAM - Dean Wesley Topping, 67, of Birmingham, died Friday, March 4, 1988, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

He was born March 15, 1920, in Lick Creek Township southwest of Birmingham, the son of Paul W. and Veda Robison Topping. He married Irene Gates Carruthers May 25, 1948, at Kahoka, Mo.

Mr. Topping lived his life near Birmingham. He graduated from Birmingham High Schoo in 1933. He was a farmer and dairyman, worked at the Dexter Company in Fairfield and formerly owned and operated a gas station in Birmingham.

He was a member of the Birmingham United Methodist Church, served on the Van Buren County Extension Council, the county Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service committee, Van Buren County Dairy Council, Van Buren County Fair Board. He was a former Farm Bureau Board Member, member of the Bonnett Community Club and was the Birmingham Homecoming King in 1987.

Mr. Topping is survived by his wife; three sons, Dennis, Wesley and Carl, all of Birmingham; eight grandchildren; and one brother Rex of Ajo, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son James.

Funeral service for Mr. Topping is tentatively set for 2 p.m. Monday at the Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with the Rev. Shirley Rozendaal officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.

Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Sunday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to Birmingham community projects and organizations and may be left at the funeral home.
