Russell Brooks

Russell E. Brooks, 72, Harlan, died Dec. 22, 1994, at his home.

He was born Feb. 27, 1922, near Keosauqua to Peter Earl and Jewel (Roberts) Brooks.

He married Mary Thomas on June 6, 1948, at the Troy United Methodist Church.

He attended Troy grade school and graduated in 1938 from the Troy High School. He attended Parsons College in Fairfield and graduated in 1950 with a degree in business administration and education. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He taught for a short time. He was a territory manager for Nutrena Mills.

In 1962 he opened his own securities and commodities offic in Harlan. He was a member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Open Board of Trade of Chicago. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Troy, a member of the Abu-Bekr Shrine of Sioux City, Parion Masonic Lodge No. 321 A.F. & A.M., Shelby County V.F.W. Post No. 941 and 50-year member of Helmer Reyelt American Legion Post No. 150.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, George of Harlan, John of St. Joseph, Mo., and James of Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Linda Schmeling of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren; one sister, Luzon Botts of Albia and one brother, Harold of West Liberty.

Funeral services were held Dec. 26, 1994, at the Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan with the Rev. Paul Wilcox officiating. Burial was in the Harland Cemetery.
