Della Gertrude Johnson, daughter of Joseph A. and Kate [Van Cleave] Johnson, was born near Bonaparte, Iowa, August 18, 1875, and passed away at her home near Farmington, Iowa, on the evening of March 16, 1944, aged 68 years, 6 months and 27 days.
She was united in marriage with Michael Simmons in 1895. To this union two children were born, Cora Ethel who died in 1915 and Leslie Simmons of New London, Iowa who with the husband and father survives.
All her life was spent in this community with the exception of four years, 1899 to 1906, when they lived in Custer county, Nebr. The past 31 years she lived on the same farm.
Almost a year ago, on March 20, 1943, she was stricken with paralysis since which time she has been almost constantly confined to her bed. She seemed to be gradually recovering until about a month ago she contracted a severe cold and after that failed rapidly.
Her husband has been her constant attendant during this year of illness, never being absent from her bedside more than a few hours at a time.
Mrs. Simmons was a good neighbor, a constant friend, a thoroughly good woman.
Besides her husband, son and daughter-in-law, there are two grandchildren, Robert Simmons of the U. S. Navy, now in training in Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Frances Appel of New London, Iowa; one sister, Alice Johnson of Bonaparte, four nephews, two nieces and many other relatives and friends. She will be missed a long time.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Story Chapel, the pastor, Rev. J. S. Ellis officiating; singing by Keith Gaston, accompanied by Mrs. Gaston. Burial Thompson cemetery.
