Long-time Bonaparte doctor dies Tuesday
Dr. James O. Ewing, 88, who served the Bonaparte community for 47 years, died Tuesday, September 22 at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.
Dr. Ewing came to Bonaparte on June 29, 1928 to work for the vacationing Dr. Reid. He liked it so much he returned to buy Reid's practice on September 1 of that year. His office was located in the State Central Bank building, first upstairs, then downstairs.
Ewing served 30 years on the Bonaparte city council, six years on the Bonaparte School Board and six years on the Harmony School Board. He also served four years as the Van Buren County Medial Examiner.
In partnership with the late Rollow H. White, Ewing built the Bonaparte Locker plant and bought and restocked the old Bonaparte Lumber Yard operated by his brother Loren.
He was honored by residents on Dr. Ewing Day held April 6, 1974. He was named an honorary alumnus of Bonaparte High School on May 25, 1985.
He set a record at Van Buren County hospital when he delivered the 1,000 baby born there.
A native of Grant City, Mo., hew(he) grew up on a farm near Allendale, Mo. 10 miles from Grant City. He married Crystal Hughes at Grundy Ceneter, Iowa in June of 1929.
