Killed in accident

Two people were killed Friday when their car was struck by a vehicle that failed to observe a stop sign, the Iowa State Patrol said.

Evelyn McDowell, 63, of Birmingham and Fenton Jones, 66, of Fremont, California, died in the accident which occurred about five miles northwest of Fairfield, the patrol said.

Investigators said both were passengers in a car driven by McDowell's husband, Emerson "Jiggs" McDowell, when it was struck at the intersection of Jefferson County roads V-63 and H-33.

Robert Gilbert, 19, of Fairfield, was headed west of H-33 and failed to observe a stop sign, the patrol said.

Gilbert's car ran into the passenger side of McDowell's northbound car and both vehicles spun into a ditch, according to investigators.

Gilbert was injured and transported to Jefferson County Hospital and Jiggs McDowell was transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Charges are pending, the state patrol said.
