VB Co L-RHillsboro woman dies following accident
A Hillsboro woman died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday, April 10 after the car she was driving collided with a moving van on Roosevelt Avenue in Burlington.
Ruth C. Shelman, 75, was pronounced dead at Burlington Medical Center at 11:05 a.m..
Police said the northbound Shelman auto was making a left turn onto an access road near Market Street when it was struck on the right side by the southbound van driven by James Alexander, 28, of Cedar Hill, Mo. who was uninjured. Both drivers were alone.
Authorities said Shelman was having difficulty breathing after the accident and was taken by medical personnel to BMC.
Des Moines County Medical Examiner Dr. Eugenio Torres said Shelman apparently suffered a heart attack shortly after the impact. He said there was no evidence of injuries sustained in the accident. Shelman had a history of heart disease, Torres said.
