John Alfred Hoffbuhr was born October 20, 1855, at Barbeck, Oldenburg, Germany, and died July 19, 1928 at his home in Gladbrook, Iowa, at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 29 days. As a boy he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1881 he came to America and arrived at Gladbrook, June 5. On March 16, 1883, he was married to Miss Friederike M. Budde. With the exception of about 8 years spent in Wyoming, they have lived in or on a farm near Gladbrook, ever since. He joined the German M. E. Church, September 21, 1884, and remained a faithful member up to the time of his death. For the last four years he was confined to the house with illness. Besides his widow he leaves to mourn his departure the following children: Lizzie Dobry, of Los Angeles, Cal., Herman of Aberdeen, South Dakota, John A. of Portland, Oregon, Will of South Pekin, Ill., Alma Schoel of Gladbrook, Iowa, Myrtle Medberry of Marshalltown.

Two sons preceded their father in death, Edward in 1903, and Lawrence in Feb., 1928. He also leaves 21 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, likewise one half brother and one half sister in Germany, besides many other relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Asling in the German M. E. Church, Monday, at 2 o'clock. The quartette composed of Mrs. Adolf Bruene, Loretta Asling, Julius Bruene and Adolf Bruene, sang the favorite hymns. Interment followed in the Gethmann Cemetery. The pall bearers were Herman Gethmann, Louis Gethmann, Edward Gethmann, Ferdinand Gethmann, John Tischhauser and Frank Mussig.
