Jonathan Wheeler was born in Randolph county, Indiana, November 29, 1829, and died at his home in Toledo, Iowa, February 1, 1910, aged 80 years, 2 months and 2 days.

In the Civil War, when the call came for volunteers, he enlisted in Company H, 84th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served nearly three years.

On October 31, 1869, he was united in marriage to Hannah Surface, daughter of John L. Surface. To this union five children were born, four of whom survive him: C. W. Wheeler, of Dawn, Missouri; W. S. Wheeler and Amelia Wheeler, of Granville, North Dakota, and Jessie Wheeler, of Toledo, Iowa. His oldest duaghter, Emily B., died February 10th, 1902. Besides his children, he leaves a widow, four grandchildren, a brother, a sister, and half brothers and half sisters to mourn his loss.

He joined the Methodist church in 1868.

He was a kind and patient husband and father, always ready to forgive a wrong and always found great pleasure in reading his bible. We know he has been called to his reward and can only say, "Thy will be done."
