She attended Iowa State College and graduated in 1927 with a degree in Home Economics Education.

While attending Iowa State College, she met Vem Dau Schmidt. The couple was united in marriage Aug. 22, 1928 and farmed near Dinsdale, IA until 1944, when they purchased a farm south of Voorhies, IA. In 1969 Vern and Alice retired to their home in Reinbeck. Vern died May 1,1986.
