Robert A. Focht

Services for Robert A. Focht, 91, of Traer, and formerly of Springdale, Ark., were held Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2, 1998, at Overton Funeral Home in Traer, Burial will take place Thursday at the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, Ia.

Mr. Focht died Aug. 30, 1998, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer.

The Rev. Marshall Monthei and Pastor Charles Downing officiated the funeral Service with music provided by Joleen Edwards, organist and Wayne Dunlavey; vocalist.

Robert Allen Focht was born June 1, 1907, at Eagle Grove, Ia., the son of Lawrence and Edna (Persons) Focht. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School and then continued his education at Drake University and later transferred to Iowa State University, graduating in 1931.

He first worked in Michigan before owning the Western Auto Store in Atlantic.

Robert’s wife, Ganelle M. Galliher died of cancer and Robert then married Hope Smith. They continued to live in Atlantic and later retired to Springdale, Ark.

In 1983 Hope’s death came suddenly and in 1984 Robert married Ruth Allen Voetberg at the Springdale Methodist Church.

In March of 1998 they, moved to Traer where Robert was a patient at Sunrise Hill Care Center and Ruth lived at Sunrise Terrace Apartments.

In free moments Robert enjoyed walking and fishing. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge Pymosa No. 271 Atlantic and a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Preceding him in death were his former wives and his parents.,

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Traer; one son, Lawrence Focht of Akron, Ohio; two daughters, Frances Benhan of Ft. Morgaa, Cob., and Mary Elizabeth Burnham of Livermore, Calif; his stepchildren, Rosemary Kersey of Indianola, Beverly Phelps of Christianburg, Va., Eleanor. Philip of Des Moines, Allen Yoetberg of Bettendorf and Dirk Voetberg of Dubuque; two sisters, Ruth Shanor of King City, Ore. and Helen Focht of Iowa City; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
