Robert L. Neubauer, 68, of Saylorville, Iowa, formerly of Slater, Iowa, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at Mercy Hospice, Johnston. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family or the Mercy Hospice Center in Johnston. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater, IA, with Reverend Steve Ransom officiating. A public gathering for family and friends will be held at the church prior to the service from 9 to 11 a.m. Inurnment will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery with military honors at a later date.
Robert LeRoy Neubauer was born in Ames, Iowa, on June 27, 1948, the third child of Daniel Raymond and Catherine (Holsied) Neubauer. Bob attended and graduated from Ballard High School. Following his education, Bob served 19 months in the Army, part of that time in Korea. After being honorably discharged, Bob started working for John Deere in Ankeny and retired in 2003 after nearly 32 years.
He was united in marriage with Sheri McHone in 1969, to which two daughters were born. On December 16, 1995, Bob and Melissa Zirbel were united in marriage and he gained a daughter. Bob enjoyed time with family, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and never missed watching the NASCAR races. Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 21 years; Melissa; daughters, Jill Klunder, Stacy (Ben) Nading and Janel Jones; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Devan, Garett, Kaylee, Robert, Austin, Makena, Joslynn and Jesse; brother, Dean (Chris) Neubauer; sister, Lois (Joe) Santi; father-in-law, Glen Zirbel; sisters-in-law, Kathy (Roger) Olthoff, Lovella (Jerry) Carpenter, Barbara (Denny) Gauley, Julie Jones, Cindy (Mike Midthun) Braniger and Melinda (Don Birkholz) Gray as well as many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents; mother-in-law, Dolores Zirbel and son-in-law, Steve Klunder.
