Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Bertha Thomas
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1960 for Bertha W. Thomas at the First Methodist Church, Nevada, at 2 p.m. Rev. James Dendler was the officiating minister.
Mrs. Norman Dobson was at the organ, playing a number of selections before and after the service. The many floral offerings were arranged and cared for by Mrs. E. D. Allen and Mrs. Rex Welty.
Casket bearers were E. D. Allen, Ross Bushman, Herbert Eddy, Marion Thomas, Leon Wilson and Richard Smith.
Burial was made in the Nevada Cemetery.
Obituary
Bertha Wherry Thomas was born January 20, 1891 to John and Mary Alice Wherry in Churdan, Iowa. The family moved to Kansas and came back to Iowa in a covered wagon when she was six years old. They settled in Story County nine miles northeast of Nevada. She taught school regularly in the Johnson Grove neighborhood before her marriage.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas joined the Johnson Grove Methodist Church and attended there until the church was closed. She taught a Sunday school class there and was active in the Ladies Aid. For a few years the family attended the Presbyterian Church in McCallsburg, Iowa. They then joined the Nevada Methodist Church.
In the fall of 1956 Mr. and Mrs. Thomas moved into their new home in Nevada where they lived until she passed away quietly in her sleep Sunday, September 4, 1960. She was a member of the Golden Age Club and the Richland Township Garden Club. She enjoyed her church very much in her own quiet way and had a very deep devotion to her family.
Bertha Thomas is survived by her husband, Charlie, two daughter, Mrs. Ivadel Picht and Mrs. Larry Chapman, a brother, Lonnie Wherry, grandsons, David Lasko, Ronnie and Craig Chapman, a granddaughter, Dieta Picht, and two great grandsons, Michael and Jimmie Lasko, all of Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Stephen Lasko and Scott Keith Chapman.
