Final Services Conducted For Mrs. J. R. Armstrong, Wife Of Retired Editor

Funeral services for Mrs. J. R. Armstrong were held in the Methodist church Friday afternoon with Rev. W. P. Gauer as officiating minister. Mrs. Grace Robinson furnished instrumental music on the organ while Mrs. Frances Stone accompanied a quintet in vocal numbers on the piano. Quintet members were Pat Caulkins, Helen Lawson, Betty Lehman, Dorothy Holland, and Naomi Pointer. They sang "Prayer Perfect," "Beneath the Cross of Jesus" and "The Lord's Prayer."

Casket bearers were Clyde Keagle, Floyd Oswalt, L. D. Holland, C. R. Stone, William Fitzgerald and Dewey Kern. Flowers were cared for by Clara Serbein and Minnie Rumbaugh. Burial was in the Collins Evergreen cemetery with graveside services being conducted by the Collins Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star with honor guard by American Legion Auxiliary. Services were in charge of the Brouhard Funeral Home of Zearing.

Life Sketch

Mae Viola Armstrong, daughter of Joseph M. Tubbs and Nellie Yount*=Tubbs was born November 11th, 1892, at Lake City and lived there the first part of her life. She was married to J. R. Armstrong January 10th, 1920 at Lake City. They lived in Pomeroy where he was in the newspaper business and continued in that capacity in Manson, Long View, Washington, and Des Moines, coming to Collins in 1927 where they lived until 1956. In January of that year he disposed of the newspaper business and moved first to Colorado Springs, Colo., and then to Phoenix, Ariz. for the betterment of his health. Mrs. Armstrong became ill and submitted to two serious operations, one February 4th and again on the 6th. She seemed recovered then became worse and died April 7th.

She was a member of the Collins Methodist Church. The American Legion Auxiliary, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Eldeen and other social clubs.

Surviving her are her husband, two brothers Merle Tubbs of Council Bluffs and Russell Tubbs of Des Moines.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The maiden name of Mae Viola (Tubbs) Armstrong's mother is Nellie Yound, not Yount as stated.
