PIONEER WOMAN WAS LAID TO REST

MRS. JAMES BROWN DIED AT HOME OF HER DAUGHTER MRS. S. J. KURTZ

Funeral services for Mrs. James Brown, 87, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. J. Kurtz near Iowa Center Monday, were held in the Evangelical church, Iowa Center Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, after which the body was laid to rest in the Iowa Center cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. C. C. Miner of Maxwell assisted by Rev. Charles Pickford of this city.

Mrs. Brown, who came to Story county when a small girl, was one of its real pioneers and her life had been a long and useful one.

Nancy Adaline Harris was born in Indiana, March 30, 1841 and departed this life at the home of Mrs. S. J. Kurtz, her daughter of Iowa Center, on Oct. 8, 1928, aged 87 years, 6 months and 8 days.

She came to Iowa with her parents when a child, settling in Keokuk county, later moving to Story county where she has since resided.

"She was married to James Brown on Oct. 12, 1865. His death occurred January 16, 1904. To this union were born Mary E., now Mrs. S. J. Kurtz of Iowa Center; Elizabeth C., now Mrs. John Warfield of Iowa Center; Samuel J. of Cambridge; and Martha Ann, and Edwin E., both of whom died in infancy.

"Mrs. Brown will be remembered as a loving mother and a kind and helpful neighbor. She was of a quiet disposition, always ready and willing to serve others while she had her health, and though she was an invalid during the past nine years, she was always patient and cheerful, never complaining, but always thoughtful of the comfort of others.

"She leaves to mourn her loss two daughters and one son, four grandchildren, and eight great grand children. Also two stepchildren, Mrs. Frank Brown and Mrs. Dan Bennethum of Maxwell, besides other more distant relatives and a host of friends."
