Four Sons in Service
The Tri-County News, Zearing, suggests that “Sanford Shearer, Sr., be unanimously declared Drum Major, and Mrs. Sanford Shearer, Sr., the Exalted Patroness of Patriotism of Story County and the state” in recognition of the fact of their sending four sons to serve their country and humanity.
One son, Marshall, enlisted in the aviation corps and will go to Pensacola, Fla., where he will began training. Roy, Sanford, Jr., and John, all went to Des Moines and enlisted as expert machinists in the Quatermaster department, passed their examination and were accepted.
Roy and Marshall are married and leave their wives behind. Sanford, Jr., is married and leaves his wife and a little eight months old daughter behind. John, the youngest brother, is just past sixteen.” – Iowa Forum

Mrs. Sanford Shearer, Jr., was formerly Miss Bessie Ray, of this place, and with her little daughter is making her home with her parents while her husband is serving his country. She is a graduate Nurse. Mrs. Roy Shearer was Miss Bertha Eveland before her marriage and often visited here in the Ray home. She is also a graduate nurse and is following her profession in Des Moines
