Fifty Years Wedded Life

Respected Roland Couple are Surprised on Their Golden Anniversary Day of Their Wedded Life

On December 4, 1858, near Lisbon, Ill., occurred the marriage of Miss Agatha Twedt born Aarthun, Sevde, Norway, to Mr. Johannes Sevde, born Sevde, Norway, Rev. P. A. Rasmusson performing the ceremony that united this worthy couple as man and wife. Only a few of the immediate friends were present at the wedding, the only ones living here at the present time being Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Thompson, who were married about two weeks earlier, but who were unable to celebrate the event on account of Mrs. Thompson's health and Mrs. Dorthe Jacobson.

In 1865, they came to Iowa across the prairies in a prairie schooner in company with several others of the early settlers of Howard township. They located on the farm, which they sold some years ago, until ten years ago when they moved to Roland and where they are still living.

Being aware that Mr. and Mrs. Sevde were among the earliest settler and that they had now lived happily together as man and wife for fifty years, a number of their neighbors and relatives, planned a successfully carried out a surprise on them to remind them of the occasion on the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage on Friday afternoon, December 4th.

Those present were Messrs and Mesdames O. J. Barke, G. Amlund, Oscar Thompson, Chas. Christian, Ole Rasmusen, Nels Osmundson, J. A. Christian, A. Sampson, Henry Thompson, John Danielson, A. O. Hereim, K. K. Teig, E. M. Rod, N. E. Waugh, Ira Erickson, A. A. Enge, S. J. Michaelson, P. A. Solem, O. S. Boyd, H. E. Myrah, O. O. Hegland, J. H. Larson, Mesdames Joren Sevde, Ole Lewison, Ellen M. Lund, Siri Watney, Anna C. Grove, J. J. Sandvig of Thor, Miss Sophie Watney, Messrs E. E. Evens, C. T. Sevde, Johannes C. Twedt, of Graettinger, Rev. H. J. Holman, of Slater, and Rev. T. T. Heimark of Story City.

A short program of singing and addresses was given, Rev. Holman and Heimark and Mr. Sevde making a few remarks, after which the ladies prepared an excellent feast of eatables, which they brought along in well-filled baskets.

Before leaving the guests presented Mr. and Mrs. Sevde with $51.00 in gold, one for each year of their married life and one for good measure. The wish of their friends is that they many enjoy many more years happily in each others company.
