OBITUARIES—MRS. DICK JOHNSON

Mrs. Dick Johnson of Allendorf, Ia., died Sunday at the age of 72 years in the Sibley hospital. Her death was caused by a heart attack.

She was the former Anna Muilenburg and was the daughter of Peter Muilenburg. Twenty-five years ago she moved away from Orange City. Prior to that she lived on the Casjens farm south of town. She made her home with her son Will in Allendorf.

She is survived by 3 brothers and 3 sisters, H. P. Muilenburg of Orange City, J. P. Muilenburg of Middleburg, Alex Muilenburg of Edgerton; Marie, Mrs. Chris Van Steenwyk of Edgerton; Nellie, Mrs. G. Vander Aarde of Milford, Ia.; and Minnie, Mrs. Allen Van Wechel of Orange City.

The funeral services were held Wednesday at Allendorf.

From the Alton Democrat, November 29, 1940, Orange City news:

Mrs. Dick Johnson nee Anna Muilenburg, died Sunday, Nov. 17, at Sibley, at the age of 73 years. She was born at Pella and came here as a baby with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Muilemburg, among the first settlers of Sioux County. Siince the death of her husband in 1930, she made her home with her son William at Sibley.

Mrs. Johnson was the mother of nine children: Gertrude, William, Sadie, Katherine, Ethel, Vera, Peter, Alvin and Johanna. Her brothers and sisters are: Sander of Edgerton, Minn., John Muilenburg and Hubert Muilenburg, Orange City, Mrs. A. Van Wechel, Orange City, Mrs. G. Vander Aarde, Milford, Mrs. C. Van Steenwyk, Edgerton, Minn.

An obituary was also published in the Sibley Gazette, November 21, 1940. It provides no additional information.

Her death certificate (informant William Johnson) has Anna Katheryn Johnson, widow of Dirk Johnson; born in Pella, Iowa October 5, 1867; parents Peter Muilenberg and Sadie Wisner, both born in Holland; resident of Sibley for 28 years; died in the Schoon hospital, Sibley, where she had been for two weeks, at 11:30 a.m. November 17, 1940; cause, chronic cardio-vascular renal disease, duration 2 years; buried in Holman Township Cemetery, Sibley.

Her FindaGrave.com page adds her parents’ life dates, Pieter Muilenburg (1835-1920) and Klazina Cornelia De Visser Muilenburg (1836-1929); 10 siblings listed; spouse Dirk Johnson (1867-1931, married 1889); two children listed. There is a portrait photo of her and a photo of her headstone.

The 1900 U.S. census shows Dirk and Annie Johnson and their family farming in Grant Township, Sioux County, and in 1910 farming in Sheridan Township, Sioux County. In 1920 and 1930 they are farming in Horton Township, Osceola County. In 1940 she (as head of household) is living in Holman Township, Osceola County, apparently no longer on a farm, with her son William (47) a corn sheller, and granddaughter Evelyn Gardner (17).
