Old Resident Passes Away

Mrs. Mary A. Hildesheim died at her home here at 6:30 P.M. July 3rd.

Mary Anna Hildesheim [was] born in Birnenkofen at Frauenburg, near Ens?irchen, Rhine Province, Germany, on Aug. 11th, 1829. Came to the U.S. of America in 1854. Married to Wm. Hildesheim June 27th, 1857, who preceded her in death on Feb. 15th, 1898. Seven children were born of whom five are alive to mourn her death namely: Joseph Hildesheim of Sublimity[?], Oregon; Sister Amata of St. Lucas, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Leverman of Mission, Texas; Jacob Hildesheim of Alton, Iowa; and Mrs. Chris Minten, of Alton, Iowa, who died April 20th, 1901. [It omits Mrs. John Gerst, who the obituary of her husband says is also a child.]

Mr. and Mrs. John Gerst, Mr. and Mrs. F. Levermann, Jacob Hildesheim and granddaughter, Marie Minten, the [latter?] of Milwaukee, Wis., were here for the funeral. Joseph Hildesheim and Sister Amata found it impossible to come.

She does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index or on FindaGrave.com.

The obituary of her husband, William (Wilhelm) Hildesheim, 1823-1898 (posted separately) says that he married Miss Mary Anna Bierenhoefen at Guttenberg, Germany, on June 27, 1857, and gives additional family information.

The 1900 U.S. census for Alton shows Mary Hildesheim, age 70, widowed, born August 1929 in Germany, immigrated in 1855, mother of 7 children, 6 living. She is living in the household of her daughter Christina (32) and son-in-law Chris (37) Minten, a stock buyer, along with her son Jacob (28), a druggist. The 1910 census for Alton shows Mary A. Hildesheim, age 80, widowed, as head of household, living with her son Jacob J. (38), who is working as a house painter. She is the mother of 7 children, 5 living, and immigrated from Germany in 1856.
