Mrs. Gossen Douma Died Tuesday Noon
Thirty-two Year Old Mother Passed Away at Le Mars; Interment Will Be at Carmel

The sad news of the death of Mrs. Gossen Douma, at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars, was received in Hull Tuesday noon, May 14th. She was 32 years old. Mrs. Douma had been a patient there since February 2nd. She had been ailing for years.

Mr. Gossen Douma and Miss Everdena Van Ommeren were married on January 13th, 1927. Mrs. Van Ommeren [i.e., Mrs. Douma] leaves to mourn her loss her husband and one son, George—three years old. Also three brothers, 3 sisters and her step-mother, and a host of other relatives and many friends.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon, May 17th, at 1 o’clock from the home, west of Hull, and at 1:30 from the local First Reformed Church with Rev. G. H. Douwstra officiating, assisted by Rev. Wm. Rottschaefer of Carmel. Burial will be made in the Carmel Cemetery. The Index joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones.

OBITUARIES—MRS. GOSSEN DOUMA

Everdena Van Ommeren was born March 22, 1907 near Carmel. She spent her girlhood in Carmel and was married to Gossen Douma January 16, 1927. To this union one son George was born on March 6, 1937 who with the husband survive. The family spent the early part of their married life near Carmel and two years more near Larchwood moving to an acreage at Hull three years ago.

Mrs. Douma has been sick a great portion of their married life and was taken to the Sacred Heart hospital at Le Mars Feb. 2, 1940 suffering with complications and remained there until she passed away May 14. [Survivors and funeral as in the above obit.]

OBITUARIES—MRS. GOSSEN DOUMA

Mrs. Everdena Douma, nee Van Ommeren, was born at Carmel, Iowa, on March 22, 1908, and passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars on Tuesday noon, May 14, 1940 at the age of 32 years, 1 month and 22 days. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Van Ommeren.

She received her education in the rural schools and grew to womanhood in the Carmel vicinity. On January 19, 1927 she was united in marriage to Mr. Gossen Douma, One son, George, now three years old, was born to this union.

Mrs. Douma is survived by her husband and son, three sisters – Anna (Mrs. P. Medema) of Rock Rapids, Johanna (Mrs. J. Medema) of Lynden, Washington and Reka (Mrs. John Hulshof) of Rock Valley; three brothers – Joe and Peter of Hull and Tony of Sheldon; and her step-mother, Mrs. S. Van Ommeren of Sioux City. Her mother, Mrs. A. J. Van Ommeren, and a sister, Marie (Mrs. John Colenbrander) died in 1818, and her father died in July, 1934.

Her FindaGrave.com page has her as Everdina Van Ommeren Douma, born 22 Mar 1908 in Carmel; died 14 May 1940 in Le Mars; buried in Carmel Reformed Church Cemetery. Parents Antonie Johannes Van Ommeren (1862-1934) and Maria Dekker Van Ommeren (1864-1919). Seven siblings listed. Spouse Gossen Douma (1901-1956). There is a photo of her headstone (name spelled Everdina).

(Gossen Douma’s FindaGrave.com page shows him to have remarried in 1941, to Gertrude Mulder).

Her death certificate also spells her name Everdina Douma; parents A. J. Van Omeren and Marie Douma[!], both born in Holland; had been in the LeMars hospital 99 days; died at 12:10 p.m. May 14, 1940; immediate cause, cardio vascular renal disease, duration 3+ years; due to nephritis or primary hypertension.
