From the Sioux County Capital, April 18, 1940:

Former Resident Dies

Mrs. Neal Spaan has received word of the death of Henry Van Pelt, a former resident here. He died at Glendale, Calif. at the age of 82. The body will be interred in Forest Lawn Mausoleum where Mrs. Van Pelt also rests. Mr. Van Pelt started the Van Pelt and Van Eizenga Lumber Yards here now owned by the Van Eizenga family.

RESEARCH NOTES

The California Death Index has Henry Vanpelt, born 22 Aug 1858 in Iowa, died 13 April 1940 in Los Angeles County, mother’s maiden name Vansterson.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Begonia Terrace [the mausoleum]. Parents Leendert Van Pelt (1822-1907) and Andrika Van Iterson Van Pelt (1828-1902. Six siblings listed. Wife Kate Fluth VanPelt (1866-1921). Two children listed: Gertrude H. Van Pelt Stadt (1893-1960) and Harriet Arabella Van Pelt Stadt (1899-1983).

In the 1885 Iowa state census the Leendert Van Pelt family, including Henry, is farming in West Branch Township, Sioux County. By 1895 Henry is living in Orange City.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1890/1891 has groom Henry Van Pelt, age 33, resident of Orange City, a lumber dealer, born in Pella, Iowa, parents Leendert Van Pelt and Andrika Van Iterson; bride Wietske J. Fluth, age 24, resident of Orange City, born in Germany, parents Jurgen Fluth and Gertrude Wittfang; married in Orange City December 10, 1890.

The 1900 U.S. census shows him and his family still in Orange City: Henry (41), married 9 years, parents born in the Netherlands, a lumberman; wife Kate (33), born in Germany, immigrated in 1884, mother of 4 children, all living; children Richard A. (8), Gertrude H. (6), Anna F. (4), and Harriet (1), all born in Iowa.

In 1910 Henry (51) is a lumber yard proprietor in Orange City, with one additional child, Viola (1). In 1915 he is still a lumber dealer in Orange City, but in 1917 the Van Pelt family appears in the Santa Monica, California city directory. In 1920 the family (minus Gertrude) is living in Glendale; Henry has no occupation.
