From the Alton Democrat, February 23, 1940, Maurice news:

Jacob Meylink, a life-long resident of this community, passed away at the Doornink hospital, Orange City, on Monday Feb. 12, at the age of 54 years, five months and one day, from an illness of pernicious anemia and stomach ulcers from which he had been suffering for a long period of time.

He was born Sept. 11, 1885, on a farm near Maurice where he spent his childhood, and has always lived in and around Maurice. On Dec. 25, 1915, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Schreur and to this union one son, Theodore, was born on June 20, 1920. The latter preceded his father in death on January 1, 1931. Surviving are the widow and one sister, Mrs. John Smits of Maurice.

Funeral services were conducted from the First Ref. church at 1:30 Thursday afternoon with Rev. John Roggen officiating. Interment was made at Sherman Township cemetery. [Followed by a long list of those here from a distance to attend the last rites.]

A similar obituary was published in the Sioux Center News, February 22, and in the Hawarden Independent, February 29. There are also briefer obituaries in the Sioux County Capital (Feb. 15) and De Volksvriend, February 22.

His death certificate (informant Herman Schreur) has Jacob Meylink, born Sept. 11, 1885 in Maurice; parents Theodore Meylink and Swantje Ludens, both born in the Netherlands; occupation, laborer; wife Gertrude; died in the De Bey Hospital, Orange City, where he had been a patient for 1 day, at 12:20 p.m. February 12, 1940; cause, gastro-intestinal hemorrhage, duration 1 week, due to duodenal ulcer; other conditions: history of perforated ulver, 12 years ago.

His FindaGrave.com page has him as Jacob “Jake” Meylink; parents Theodore Meylink (1849-1921) and Zwaantje Ludens Meylink (1858-1924); child Theodore Meylink (1920-1931); sibling Janna Meylink (1884-1890); no wife listed. There is a photo of his headstone.

The 1910 U.S. census shows him (age 24) as a farmer living with his parents. The 1920 census shows him as a farmer in Sherman Township, renting his farm. In the 1930 census he owns his Sherman Township farm.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1915/1916 has groom Jacob Meylink, age 31, resident of Maurice, a farmer, born in Maurice, parents Thodore[sic] Meylink and Zwaantje Ludens; bride Anna Gertrude Schurs[sic], age 25, resident of Maurice, born in Vriesland, Michigan, parents Aaron Schreur and Gertrude Kuipers; married in Maurice December 25, 1915.

His World War I draft registration card (September 1918) shows him, age 33, as a farmer in Maurice, nearest relative Gertrude Meylink, tall, medium build, blue eyes, dark brown hair.
