Barbara Lee was born on July 8, 1963, in South Holland, Illinois, the daughter of Henry and Joyce (Vander Lee) Dering. She was raised in South Holland, where she graduated from high school before attending Dordt College in Sioux Center, where she met her future husband.

On August 6, 1983, she was united in marriage to David Wayne De Jong in South Holland. They made their first home by Newkirk and later moved to the De Jong Family farm south of Hospers. They were blessed with four sons. David passed away unexpectedly on June 4, 2013, after more than 29 years of marriage. In the summer of 2015, Barb moved to a home in Orange City.

Barb was a homemaker and enjoyed being a wife and mother. Before children, she worked at Diamond Vogel Paint in Orange City. When the boys were young, she worked in Hospers at Co-op Gas and Oil and Poppema Insurance Agency, where she earned her insurance provider license. After Dave passed, she began working at Ag Partners in Sheldon and most recently worked at Edward Jones in Orange City as an on-call Branch Office Assistant. In her free time, she was found volunteering at Bibles for Missions in Orange City, attending Connected By Heart and Women in Denim meetings, as well as participating in Relay for Life events. She was an avid gardener and spent time outdoors planting flowers and growing vegetables. She liked walking with friends, going for bike rides, spending time boating with her sons, and playing games with her friends and family. She also loved being a grandmother and cherished the time she spent with her granddaughters. She showed her love to all those around her by sharing her faith, giving of gifts, and spending time with others.

Survivors include her four sons, Daniel De Jong, of Hospers; Luke De Jong, and his wife, Susan; Caleb De Jong; and Seth De Jong, and his wife, Caitlin, all of Orange City; three grandchildren, Mary Ellen, age 4; Joanna Grace, age 3; and Lydia Alyce, age twenty months; a brother and his wife, Gary and Zoey Dering, of Gig Harbor, Washington; a brother-in-law and his wife, Robert and Bea Beasley, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; David’s parents, Frank and Wyllean De Jong, of Hospers; his siblings and their spouses, Connie and Gordon Zonnefeld, of Sheldon; Robert and Carla De Jong, of Orange City; and Daryl and Lori De Jong, of Sheldon; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Beasley.

Memorials may be directed to the De Jong family for future mission designation.
