Garlene Mulder was born January 29, 1925, to Arie and Marie (Schutt) De Boom in Hull, Iowa. Her family farmed in the Hull and Sioux Center area. As a young woman, she cleaned houses for others and then went to work at the Sioux Center Creamery. On December 12, 1947, she was united in marriage to Henry C Mulder in Sioux Center, Iowa, where Henry worked as a hired man for six years. In 1956, they and their three children began farming near Rock Rapids, Iowa. They were blessed with four more children, though they were saddened by the loss of Robert Dean at birth. In 1988, Henry and Garlene moved into a house in Rock Rapids. Henry passed away in 2002.

Faith and family were the top priorities in Garlene’s life. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids and was active in the RCWM and various circles over the years. She was a quiet, behind-the-scenes person involved in many organizations with her husband, Henry. She liked to play games and make puzzles with her family. She also enjoyed playing Bingo at Premiere Estates and later at George Good Samaritan Society. In all circumstances Garlene was content, trusting God would take care of her and her needs. She was always happy and enjoyed life.

Garlene is survived by two daughters and four sons; Cheryl (Le Roy) Hackrott of Harrisburg, SD; Duane (Helen) Mulder of Sioux Center, IA; Dennis (Holly) Mulder of Steen, MN; James Mulder of St. Joseph, MO; Linda (John) Meyer of Stewartville, MN; and Gary (Robyn) Mulder of Volga, SD; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Kay Mulder of Ireton, IA; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Garlene was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; infant son, Robert Dean Mulder; great grandson, Gabriel Hackrott; her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence (Gladys) De Boom; sister and brother-in-law, Maxine (Lawrence) Van’t Hul; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dick (Suzanne) Mulder, Tillie (Steve) Vanden Brink, Harry (Nelvina) Mulder, Siena Mulder, and Charles (Joyce) Mulder.
