Peter Stanley, who would become known as Stan, was born on March 28, 1936, in Hull, one of seven children born to Sam P. and Gertrude (Post) Westra. He was raised on a dairy farm near Inwood until the age of nine, when his family moved to a farm north of Carmel, where he attended country school through the eighth grade.

He was united in marriage to JoAnn Van Wyhe on September 29, 1961, on his parents’ farm. They briefly made their home in Hull before moving onto his family’s farm, where they raised their two daughters. They settled in Hull again in December of 2000. In addition to being a farmer, Stan helped construct steel bins for Kooima Manufacturing in Rock Valley, assisted Chuck Steinstra with his carpentry work, and worked part-time at the Sioux Center Vet Clinic for 32 years.

Mr. Westra was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hull, where he had served as an elder and deacon, as well as being an RCYF sponsor along with his wife, JoAnn. He enjoyed having his family come over for “get togethers”, giving his grandchildren and great-grandchildren rides on his golf cart and tractor, and attending their various church and school activities. He also liked to play card games and do word searches, and in earlier years he participated in a bowling league. He was always willing to lend a hand to his neighbors and was known for his good sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife of more than 59 years, JoAnn, of Hull; his two daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Dale Kraayenbrink, of Sioux Center, and Linda and Steve Janecek, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eight grandchildren, Nicole, and her husband, Todd De Weerd, and Derek Kraayenbrink, and his wife, Erin, all of Sioux Center; Katie, and her husband, Grant Howe, of Hinton; Matthew Janecek, and his wife, Jessica, of Harrisburg, South Dakota; Michael Janecek, Travis Janecek, Jordan Janecek, and his wife, Abigail, and Jeremy Janecek, all of Sioux Falls; thirteen great-grandchildren, with one on the way; two brothers and their wives, Gary and Sandy Westra, and Wes and Brenda Westra, all of Hull; three sisters-in-law, Beth Westra, of Fulda, Minnesota; Joey Westra, of Hull; and Arlene Van Wyhe, of Rock Rapids; a brother-in-law and his wife, Ray and Carol Van Wyhe, of Luverne, Minnesota; an aunt, Pearl Roozing, of Hull; and a special friend, Terri Mouw, of Sioux Center.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Arlene Westra, Dwayne Westra, Deana, and her husband, Henry Fluit, and Don Westra; a sister-in-law, Hilene Westra; a nephew, Mitchel Westra; JoAnn’s two brothers, Henry Van Wyhe, and his wife, Clazina, and Clarence Van Wyhe; and her sister-in-law, Carol Van Wyhe.
