WALTER AARDAPPEL, FORMER ENGINEER ANSWERS CALL

Walter Aardappel, former Sioux County engineer and well known business man, passed on at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, Sunday, August 16th. He was taken to the hospital July 30th, and was recuperating for an operation when a blood clot formed in his brain and caused his passing.

He was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on March 6, 1874. When nine years old he moved his parents to Harrison, South Dakota. He graduated in civil engineering from Iowa University and for six years was engaged in erection of government buildings in various parts of the country. He came to Orange City as county engineer twenty-nine years ago and served in that capacity for twelve years. Since then he has been special agent for the New York Life Insurance Company. He was known all over the county, attaining much success and often standing at the head of agents of his company in sales.

On June 22, 1907, Mr. Aardappel married Sarah Van Strien of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Survivors include his wife and one daughter, Betty: Mrs. Arie Van Kley of Hospers; three brothers: John of Los Angeles, Clarence of Spooner, Wisconsin, Charley of Armour, South Dakota; and three sisters: Mrs. Ella Van Den Bos, Corsica, South Dakota, Mrs. H.M. Scott of Glendale, California, and Mrs. Henry Koosters of Holland, Michigan. One sister, Mrs. Gerrit Van Arendonk of Harrison, South Dakota, preceded him in death.

Funeral services are being held today (Thursday) at 1:30, at the home and at 2:00 o’clock in the Second Christian Reformed Church, Reverend A. Jabaay, officiating. And interment in the Hospers Cemetery.

Mr. Aardappel was one of the founders and charter members of the 2nd Christian Reformed Church. Consistory members served as pallbearers and the wives of members were seated with the family at the church services.

Mrs. Staadt arrived early in the week from California, also Clarence Aardappel of Spooner, Wisconsin and Chas. of Armour, South Dakota while Mrs. Henry Lucas, a sister of Mrs. Aardpappel, came Wednesday to be present at the services.

Mr. Aardappel will be missed not only by his family and church associates but by hundreds of friends. He was a man of unbounded energy and enthusiasm and his passing is a distinct loss to the community. He was president of the Men’s Citizens League, an organization which served its purpose and is no longer active.
