From the Hawarden Independent, October 7, 1937:

Death Claims Former Resident

Thomas Hatton was called to Lewiston, Minn., by the serious illness and subsequent death of his brother-in-law, Jay Eddy, who is well known to older residents here and south of Ireton. Mr. Eddy was a resident of Washington township for many years and when the Brethren church, two miles west of Graig, was a going institution, Mr. Eddy was a pastor there for a time. He married Ruth, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Morey, who with three children survives.

Funeral services were held at Worthington, Minn., and burial was made there. The writer was well acquainted with the deceased having carried mail for him for some time and has recollection of him as a fine Christian and friend.

A similar obituary in the Sioux Center News, October 7, 1937, notes that: Rev. Eddy will be remembered by many older people of this section as being the pastor of the Dunkard church which flourished in the late nineties ten miles southwest of Ireton. Mrs. Eddy was the former Ruth Morey who was reared in Washington township. Rev. Eddy was pastor of this church for a number of years until the congregation disbanded some 25 years ago. The church building was purchased by members of the First Reformed Church at Ireton and moved to its present location in town.

From the Worthington (Minnesota) Daily Times, October 3, 1937:

FORMER PASTOR LOCAL CHURCH TAKEN BY DEATH

Rev. J. A. Eddy, former pastor of the Church of the Brethren, near here, died at his home at Lewiston Friday at 1:00 p.m., after a month’s illness with gangrene, which developed after the appearance of a blood clot in one of his limbs. Funeral services will be held at the church southwest of town tomorrow, October fourth, at 2:30 o’clock, with Rev. Joshua Schechter, local pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Winghert of Kingsley, Ia. Burial will be in the cemetery south of the church.

Urged to submit to amputation of the infected member, Mr. Eddy refused, preferring to let the malady take its course, resulting in the termination of his life.

After serving the Worthington congregation for about 14 years, Mr. Eddy in 1929 moved to Lewiston, where he was pastor until illness forced the termination of his service. During his service in the local field, he enjoyed a wide acquaintance in Worthington and vicinity, where he was esteemed for his manly worth, his genial disposition, and his sincerity. His death will be mourned far beyond the limits of the membership of his former charge.

Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. A. E. Bearden of Lewiston, and two sons, Aaron of Minneapolis and Orville of MacPherson, Kansas.
