Aged Resident Called

Mrs. Petj Gerritson died at the home of her son, Jake, near Rock Valley, last week Wednesday, October 12, 1938, at the advanced age of 87 years and 6 months.

Mrs. Gerritson was born in the Netherlands, April 12, 1851, where she grew to womanhood and was married 69 years ago, to Mr. Gerritson. She and her husband came to this country 65 years ago. They located in Wisconsin where they lived for about ten years and then moved to Sioux county. Mr. Gerritson died eight years ago.

Besides other relatives, Mrs. Gerritson leaves five [i.e., six] children: Will, of Inwood; Mrs. C. DeGroot, Sioux Center; Albert of Rock Valley; Mrs. Albert De Lang, New Holland, S.D., Jake of Rock Valley and Arie of Doon.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Christian Reformed church in Rock Valley, and the remains were taken to Sioux Center for burial.

Mrs. Peetje Gerritsen a resident of Rock Valley and vicinity for many years, passed away at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs Jake Gerritsen who live northeast of Rock Valley on Wednesday morning , October 12, 1938. She had reached the advanced age of 87½ years to the day.

Mrs. Gerritsen was born in The Netherlands. Mr. Gerritsen preceded her in death eight years ago. Mrs. Gerritsen is survived by six children who are, William Gerritsen of Inwood, Mrs. Ida De Groot of Sioux Center, Albert and Jake Gerritsen of Rock Valley, Mrs. Anna De Lange of New Holland, S.D. and Arie Gerritsen of Doon. She is also survived by one brother and one sister.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Reformed church in Rock Valley on Friday afternoon, Oct. 14. Rev. Mr. Henry J. Triesenburg officiated. Burial was made in Valley View cemetery . Psalm 116 verses one and two were sung at the services in memory of Mrs. Gerritsen. It was the last song she was able to sing on the day of her death.

Her death certificate gives her name as Mrs. Henry Gerritsen; born April 12, 1851 in the Netherlands; resident of the U.S. 67 years and of Rock Valley 8 years; parents Albert Mulder and Gretje Harmsen; a housekeeper until the time of her death; died at 1 a.m. October 12, 1938; cause, senility and pulmonary edema, onset Oct. 12, 1938; buried at Sioux Center.

Neither she nor her husband appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index.

Her FindaGrave.com page has her as Peetje Mulder Gerritsen; born 3 May 1851 in Uddel, Apeldoorn Municipality, Gelderland, Netherlands; died 12 Oct. 1938 in Rock Valley; buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. Parents Elbert Mulder (1822-1902) and Grietje Harmsen Mulder (1822-1898). Eight siblings listed. Husband Henry Gerritsen (1846-1930, married 1869). Five children listed: William Gerritsen (1870-1951), Ida May Gerritsen De Groot (1872-1958), Albert Gerritsen (1878-1970), Anna Gerritsen DeLange (1880-1953), and Jacob Gerritsen (1885-1973).
