Mrs. Joe Nemmers Dies at Dell Rapids

Mrs. Joe Nemmers of Dell Rapids, So. Dak., died early Monday morning after a short illness, according to news received by relatives here. Mrs. Nemmers was the former Miss Lena Roder of Granville. Funeral services were held at Dell Rapids Wednesday morning.

Surviving Mrs. Nemmers are her husband and eleven children, Roman of Cheyenne, Wyo., Charles, Florence, Marie, John, Leonard, Helen, Charlene, Quentin, Arnold, [illegible word], Miss Gertrude of Mitchell. The second son, Alexander, died three years ago. [The text is a bit fuzzy, and some of the names are uncertain.]

Her FindaGrave.com page gives her name as Magdalena Roeder Nemmers (although the photo of her headstone shows her forename as Magdalene); born 3 Jan 1887 in Granville; died 18 July 1938 in Minnehaha County, South Dakota; buried in Saint Marys Catholic Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Parents Michael Roeder (1840-1911) and Catherine Burg Roeder (1855-1923). Six siblings listed. Husband Joseph N. Nemmers (1874-1960). Children: Charlotte M. Nemmers Hinricher (unknown-2020), Roman N. Nemmers (1907-1977), Aloysius M. Nemmers (1909-1932), Florence Mary Nemmers Ginsbach (1911-2007), Charles F. Nemmers (1913-1993), Gertrude Nemmers (1915-2013), Mary Christine Nemmers Page (1916-2009), John R. Nemmers (1918-2002), Leonard Anthony Nemmers (1920-1981), Helen Catherine Nemmers (1922-2015), Urban Nemmers (1924-1924), Arnold E. Nemmers (1930-2002).

The Sioux County marriage register for 1905/1906 has groom Joseph Nemmers, age 31, residence Granville, a merchant, born in Iowa, parents Michael [Nemmers] and Catherine Marx; bride Magdalene Roeder, age 18, residence Granville, born in Granville, parents Michael Roeder and Catherine Berg; married in Granville May 15, 1906.

The 1910 and 1920 U.S. censuses show the family living in Granville, where Joseph is the proprietor of a general store. In 1930 they are living in Dell Rapids, where he is a farmer.
