Obituary: Hawarden, IA—Alma Sophia Petry, "Granny", died peacefully early Monday morning, June 18, 2012 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden at the age of 92. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2012 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery.
Alma Sophia was born July 28, 1919 to Charlie and Minnie Bultman, southeast of Hawarden, IA in rural Sioux County. She attended country school and learned her gardening and quilting skills from her parents. In 1937, the family moved to a farm in South Dakota. On December 17, 1941 she married Wendell Petry at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage. They lived and farmed on the Petry homestead where they raised their family. After Wendell’s death in 1969, Alma moved to Hawarden where she took training to be a nurse’s aide. She then worked in nursing homes at Alcester, Hawarden, and at the local hospital. Upon retiring, Alma then cared for her garden, flowers, and enjoyed sewing and quilting. Alma was able to live in her home until health issues forced her to move to the Hillcrest Health Care Center three years ago. She was a life long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden where she taught Sunday School, was a member of Ladies Aid, Lamplighters, and LWML. Alma was lovingly known as Granny by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Granny is survived by her son, James (Norma) Petry of Hawarden; daughter, Lorane Prendergast of Bronxville, NY; three grandchildren, Steve (Cherie) Petry of Wagner, SD, Susie (Mike) Karbo of Burke, SD, and Michael Prendergast of Philadelphia, PA; and six great-grandchildren, Hannah and Brock Karbo, and Paige, Payton, Parker, and Payne Petry.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Minnie Bultman; husband, Wendell; daughter, Marlene; son, Thomas; sisters, Ida Dougherty and May Bell; and brother, Clarence Bultman.
