Two Sioux County Farms Receive Awards

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Robert H. Lounsberry today announced the designation of 698 “Century Farms” for 1977. To qualify for the century farm designation, a farm must have been owned by the same family at least 100 years, with the present owner having been related to a person who owned the land 100 years ago. The farm must also be at least 40 acres.

The century farms recognition program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and the Iowa Farm Bureau. It began in the bicentennial year, 1976, with 5,000 century farms designated, and will continue in subsequent years.

The two farms gaining recognition this year include those owned by Charles and Edward Lubbers and one owned by Peter L. Van Kley. The awards were formally presented to the present land owners at the state fair on August 23.
