Some research notes were added were add by Wilma J. Vande Berg Submitter took liberty of adding numbering to the paragraphs of the children within the story that was in the book.
John G. Linnan was born near Littleport, Clayton County, Iowa, on June 15, 1865, to Patrick and Johanna Cooley Linnan. When he was eight years old, the family moved from Littleport to their homestead located about one mile west of the present town of Maurice. Patrick had gone there the previous year and had selected and filed Claim for it. As the railroad in those days came only as far as Algona, Iowa, the family had to come the rest of the way by wagon. However, John rode horseback as he had to help drive their livestock – a distance of about 135 miles.
John married Kate Fitzpatrick on June 22, 1892, at St. Mary’s Church in Maurice. They lived on the family farm until they retired from active farming in 1924, at which time they moved to 314 Third Street in Maurice.
Kate was born to Luke and Margaret Culligan Fitzpatrick on August 2, 1869, on a farm near Colesburg, Delaware County, Iowa, which is about 25 miles from Littleport, Iowa, where John was born. However, the families had not met until they came to Sioux County.
Before her marriage, Kate attended Northern Illinois College at Dixon, Illinois, and taught in rural schools in Sioux County. Kate died on August 14, 1944, and John died on October 17, 1960, at the age of 95.
John and Kate’s children were: Thomas, Luke, Mary, John, Joseph Clement, Margaret, Charles, Joan, Eleanor and Sarah.
1. Thomas who was born December 19, 1893, attended the Maurice Public Schools. He was the only one in his high school graduating class. After his graduation from St. Thomas Military College in St. Paul, Minnesota, he helped farm the family farm until the day World War I was declared. He enlisted and served in the army until the war was over. Then he returned to farming. He married Ruth Hilbelink and they had one child, Mary Clare Linnan Knudsen, who lives with her husband Jerry in Humboldt, Iowa. They have four children. Tom died on July 1, 1943, and Ruth in 1962.
2. Luke E. Linnan was born April 8, 1895. After attending Maurice Public Schools and St. Thomas Military College, he started studying for his law degree at Iowa University. However, when World War I was declared, he like Tom, enlisted – he chose the air force instead of the army. When the war was over, he returned to Iowa University to complete his law studies. After he received his law degree, he joined the Mc-Mahon and Sullivan law firm in Algona, and practiced law there until death on September 17, 1975, with the exception of the time when he served as a judge in the Iowa Supreme Court. He married Nell Wassenburg and they had two adopted children: Brian of Omaha, and Bernadine Linnan Elbert of Algona.
3. Mary Linnan Doherty, John and Kate’s first daughter, was born August 18, 1896. She attended Maurice Public Schools and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Alton, Iowa. She taught in the rural schools around Maurice, until her marriage to William D. Doherty. After living on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa, for a short time, they moved to a farm one mile west and one-fourth of a mile south of Maurice. They had four children: Maureen, Kenneth, Florence and William (Billy). Unfortunately, Maureen and Kenneth were both victims of cancer and they died the same day October 23, 1984. Florence who received her four-year degree in nursing, died on November 24, 1973. Her daughter, Stacey, lives in California, where she practices oral therapy. William Doherty and his family now live in Kansas.

She then went to Pullman, Washington, where she was on the faculty of Washington State University for over 30 years. Since her retirement she has lived in the family home in Maurice.
