Kuiken, Jake 1887-1933 & Alida Vander Stoep Family
This story was taken from pages 411-412 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Jake Kuiken was born March 5, 1887, in St. Anne Parockie, The Netherlands. His parents were Gepke Porte and Douwe Kuiken. Jake came to America with his parents and sister Nellie in 1889. His brothers Frank, Gerrit, Martin and sisters, Griet and Renske, were soon added to the family.
Jake attended school in Iowa, until eleven and through the fifth grade. He worked for many farmers, living in their homes and earning a little money.
On March 1, 1910, he married Alida, the daughter of Klaas and Nellie Vander Stoep. They started farming on bare land ½ mile west of the Million Dollar Corner near Maurice, building their own home and outside buildings.
Jake was a self-educated man – the Bible his favorite book. Music was also very important to him, and encouraged all his children to get an education and take music lessons. He sang in a male quartet, all who were members of Maurice Reformed Church. He was in the consistory many years in the church and a friend of the Rev. Straks. One of the highlights of his life was being appointed as a delegate to General Synod in New York City. His wife Alida was able to accompany him.
Jake and Alida (later called Allie) became parents of seven children: Grace (Ver Steeg), Clarence, Dewey, Nellie (Boone), Muriel (Hop), Elaine (Riphagen) and Allen.
The winter of 1933, Jake became very ill with mastoids and was rushed to LeMars Hospital, where he died on February 14, at the age of 46. Alida stayed on the farm with the family until 1937, when she married Titus Van Bruggen and moved to his farm in Hawarden.
