Weis, Peter 1840-1917 & Mary Meisch Family
This family story is from the St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983 page 225. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added as well as obits.
Peter Weis Family – Peter and Mary Weis were the parents of ten children. Mrs. Mat Kellen, Mrs. Math Reith, Mrs. Phil Muehl, Mrs. Carl Versluis, Mrs. Joel Kuhl, Mrs. Ben Berg and Mrs. Oscar Kuhl. One son and two daughters died earlier.
Peter was born July 12, 1840 and died January 8, 1917. Mary was born September 18, 1843 in Luxemburg. She came to the United States at the age of 20 and settled in Dubuque. She later married Peter in Dubuque and they lived near Granville for 25 years. She died on Jan 29, 1929 at Redfield SD, at the home of one of her daughters.

Peter Weis born 12 July 1840 Folschette, Redange, Diekirch, Luxembourg, died 8 Jan 1917 Granville IA. He was the son of John Nicholas Weis 1807-1878 and Margaret Federspiel 1807-1877. He married Mary Meisch 1843-1929 on 31 Aug 1868 at Dubuque IA.
Mary Meisch was born 18 Sep 1843 Mersch, Luxembourg and died 29 Jan 1929 at Redfield SD. Her parents were Nicholas Meisch and Marie Himes. Peter and Mary had the following children:

8. Mary Magdelena ‘Lena’ Weis born 22 Nov 1882 Granville, IA died 13 May 1957 Yankton, SD.
She married Joseph Walter Kuhl 1878-1959. Three children listed as Clarence Bernard Kuhl 1905-1977, Hazel M. Kuhl 1911-1983, and Florence M. Kuhl 1917.9. Emma Weis born 28 Apr 1885 IA died 25 Jul 1970 Mason City IA. She married Bernard Berg. Find A Grave has the children – Florence M. Rozen, Pearl C. Berg, Omer D. She married Oscar Raymond Kuhl 1884-1962 They had children Lester Peter Kuhl 1912-2001, Vernon Anton Kuhl 1913-1991, Leo Oscar Kuhl 1915-1992, Elmer John Kuhl 1916-2001, Oscar C. Kuhl 1919-1996, Bernard Maynard Kuhl 1923-2010.

Weis, Peter born 12 July 1840 died 8 Jan 1917 on same stone is wife Mary buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery, Granville, IA as listed in the Sioux County cemetery index. No obit was readily found in the papers.

OBITUARY of Mary (Mrs. Peter Weis) 1843-1919
From the Alton Democrat, February 1, 1919:
MRS. MARY WEIS FUNERAL FRIDAY Mrs. Mary Weis of Granville passed away Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 29th, at the home of her daughter in Redfield, S.D., where she had gone to spend the winter. Mrs. Weis was 85 years of age and she had lived at Granville for about 25 years. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at nine o’clock at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Granville.She was born in Luxemburg, but came to the United States when about 20 years of age, settling at Dubuque where she was later married to Peter Weis. Mrs. Weis is survived by seven daughters, namely, Mrs. Mat. Kellen of Alton; Mrs. Mat. Reith and Mrs. Phil Muehl of Granville; Mrs. Carl Versluis; Mrs. Joe Kuhl of Redfield, S.D.; Mrs. Ben Berg, Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. Oscar Kuhl of Wilmont, Minn. One son and two daughters preceded their mother in death. Mrs. Weis was a devoted mother and a faithful member of the Granville church and Rosary society. The family have the sympathy of many friends.

FUNERAL HELD FRIDAY – GRANVILLE
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Weis, a resident of Granville for 25 years, were held Friday morning at St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Granville. Rev. Father J. A. Gerlemann read the requiem high mass and Rev. Father Oken officiated at the cemetery. A beautiful sermon was delivered by Father Gerlemann in tribute to the beloved mother who passed away on January 29 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Kuhl, at Redfield, S.D. All the surviving children were present at the funeral, also Henry Zens, a son-in-law, whose wife died two years ago, came from his home at Epiphany, S.D., his three children accompanying him, to attend the services. Besides the seven daughters who survive their mother, she is also survived by forty-six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Weis was eighty-four years old.
