Jasper, Charles 1887-1940 & Effie Kamstra Family
This story was taken from page 391 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Jacobus Jasper was born in Friesland, Holland, in 1838, and his wife, Riemke Alsma/Elsma was born at Leeuwarden, Holland, in 1839. In 1863, Jacobus and Riemke were married in Holland. They came to the United States in 1871, and homesteaded on a farm 3˝ miles southwest of Orange City. They were the parents of nine children. A daughter died in infancy and a son died on the boat trip to America. Jacobus died in December of 1896, and after his death Riemke Jasper and two of her sons, Ring and Charles, moved into a newly built home in Orange City. This was in May of 1908, and in October of that year, she became ill with pneumonia and passed away. (Added - See the obits of both Jacobus and Riemke Jasper toward the end of this narrative.)
Charles (Charlie) Jasper was born about 1890, near Orange City. He married Effie Kamstra in 1910. Effie’s parents were Weibe Kamstra (who was born in Holland, in 1865), and Jennie (Riepma) Kamstra (who was born in Friesland.) Jennie Riepma came to Orange City, from Friesland, with her father, Teunis, and two brothers. Jake and Everett R. Weibe Kamstra and Jennie Riepma were married in 1887. Their only method of transportation was by wagon. Jennie died in 1938, and Weibe died in 1940. ( Added - See their obits of Weibe and Jennie Kamstra toward the end of this narrative)
After Effie Kamstra and Charles were married, they moved to Minnesota, and South Dakota. They had four children. A daughter Jennie, was born in Twin Brooks, South Dakota. Twin sons, James and William were born in Correll, Minnesota. Another daughter died in infancy. Jennie was eight years old and the boys were six when they came to Iowa.
Charlie worked at several different jobs. He worked in a butcher shop in Maurice, which was owned by Wiebe Kamstra, drove truck, worked on the Great Northern Railroad where he broke his leg on a railway cart. He was janitor and also drove school bus for the Maurice school. He also worked for a time in the elevator. He liked to hunt and trap and so did his sons; Jim and Bill. Charlie passed away of cancer when he was quite young.
Effie did a lot of sewing for others; even made coats. She helped deliver babies for Dr. Ogggel and other people.
The children all grew up in Maurice, and attended school at the old (wooden) school for awhile. Then they had the pleasure of going to the new school-house. Jennie was a telephone operator in Maurice for nine years. She worked with Ada Ard and Minnie Westra. Jennie was married to Wallace Trigg and lived in Minnesota, California, Sheldon, and Doon, Iowa. At this writing (1983), Jennie is a resident of the Lyon Manor Care Center in Rock Rapids, Iowa, where she’s pretty well confined to bed – due to Multiple Sclerosis. Bill Jasper did farm work and brother Jim worked for the Maurice Truck Service. Bill and Jim were both in the service during World War II, and both were overseas in Belguim, France, and Germany. After Bill came home, he went to Artesia, California, where he worked for several years as a milker on his Uncle Andrew Hop’s dairy farm and later operated a bar. His mother, Effie, and sister Jennie and family also moved to California, where Effie passed away. Wallace and Jennie moved back to Iowa and lived in Doon, until moving to the Lyon Manor Care Center where Wallace passed away. Bill Jasper died in California, in 1985, and brother Jim passed away in 1987. Jim Jasper’s family history will appear elsewhere (in the Maurice book).

From the Sioux County Herald of Dec 9, 1896
A Pioneer's Sudden Death. J. J. Jasper, a well-to-do farmer who lived four miles southwest of town, dropped dead on the sidewalk just east of G. L. Vande Steeg's Store Monday afternoon. He had made some purchases at the store and had placed them in his buggy and was stricken while walking to the horses heads to unhitch. J. G. Van den Berg and Nick Jelgerhuis picked him up a minute or two after he had fallen. He gave only one gasp as they turned him over.
The body was carried to Kuyper's Undertaking rooms and his family notified. The funeral occurred this morning at 11 o'clock from the Christian Reformed church, Rev. M. Brink conducting the services. Mr. Jasper was born in Holland and was fifty-five years of age. He came to Sioux county from his native place early in the seventies, being one of the early settlers.
He was a genial, generous man, the friend of everyone, and his death will be widely mourned. For several years he has suffered from an affliction of the heart and his sudden death was
not unexpected. He leaves a widow and four sons to mourn his departure.

Funeral services for the late Wiebe Kamstra will be held at one o'clock Friday afternoon at the Andrew Hop home at Maurice and at 2:00 o'clock at the Protestant Reformed Church in Orange City, Van Etten Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Wiebe Kamstra, aged Orange City resident, received injuries last Friday night in an automobile collision on highway 10 three and a half miles west of Orange City that proved fatal. He died in an Orange City hospital Tuesday afternoon at 2:45.
Mr. Kamstra, who was 78 years of age, was driving eastward, accompanied by Charles Bergsma, when the collision occurred with the car driven by John Hofmeyer, Jr., who was going west. The aged man, apparently had driven too far toward the center of the road and the left front wheels of the two cars met. The Kamstra car was swung around and during this Mr. Kamstra was evidently thrown out of the car for he was found on the roadway, pinned beneath the left rear wheel of his own car.
Officers believe that the rear end of his car was swung off the ground and that he landed under the wheel when the car settled down. He suffered severe chest injuries and passed away four days later. Neither Mr. Bergsma who was riding with him nor Mr. Hofmeyer driver of the other car, was injured. The Kamstra car was badly demolished but the other one suffered little damage except on the left side.
The accident happened at about 7:30 o'clock Friday evening and the wrecked cars nearly blocked the highway for some time after that.
Mrs. Jennie (Riepma) Kamstra died some years ago but a number of children survive their parents, including John; who farms near McNally, and Tony who is located in California; Mrs. Charles Jasper and Mrs. Andrew Hop of Maurice are children; also Mrs. Henry Borrink of Cherokee. Mrs. Jerry Kraai, another daughter, and her husband died some years ago.
Mr. Kamstra owned the meat market and grocery at Maurice some twenty years ago, the business being operated by Henry Borrink. He has owned various residence properties in Orange City from time to time. The accident increases by one more the number of fatal highway crashes in Sioux county which have been unusually severe during the past several months.OBITUARY of Jennie Kamstra Mrs. Wiebe 1865-1938 (Mother of Effie Kamstra Mrs. Charles Jasper)
