Hop, Henry 1860-1945 and Artje Boone Family
This story was taken from page 382 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Henry Hop was born in the Netherlands, September 16, 1860, and was married to Artje Boone (1862-1949) on September 16, 1887. While living in the Netherlands, they became parents to Jake, Gerrit and Chris. Some time after 1892, they came to America, and settled in Wisconsin, where two more boys, Andrew and Ira were added to their family and also a daughter Hattie who later became Mrs. Pierce Vander Brake.
Farming looked more promising in northwest Iowa, so they moved their family to a farm near Maurice. After the sons started leaving home Henry semi-retired to a small home in Maurice, where he then became maintenance man on the county roads. Soon after retiring Mrs. Hop became bed-ridden with a heart disease. Many remember her as a tired mother of five boys.
Henry Hop died in Hawarden, in June of 1945, and Artje lived four more years, dying in May of 1949, in Orange City.
