Included – parents of Mathew - John Peter Perlot and Margaret Theis family.This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983 page 196 and 197. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.
Mathew Perlot Family
John P. Perlot, originally from Ardennes, France, and his 16 year old bride, Margaret Theis Perlot, came to northwest Iowa, with a caravan from Jackson County, Iowa in May, 1870.
They settled on a farm south of Granville, adjoining the farm settled by the Harens family. They built their sod homes bank to back, and had an adjoining well between them, until they were able to build something more suitable. The Perlot’s first child, Mathew, was born in this home March 3, 1871. He was said to be the first white boy born in this settlement of Luxemburg descendants who came to Sioux County from eastern Iowa.
John and Margaret Perlot had six children: Mathew. Peter, Michael, Kathryn, John and Marguerite. Mathew married Elizabeth Haupert, and Michael married Mary Haupert, daughters of Michael and Mary Ann Haupert, who lived in the Granville area. The other members of the John Perlot family later moved to Denver, Colorado. Kathryn married Edgar Butler in Denver. After he died, she married Joseph Nelson, Peter, John and Marguerite never married.
Mathew Perlot, son of John P. Perlot and Margaret Theis Perlot, was born on March 3, 1871, in the sod home his father had built on the land he homesteaded north of Granville, Iowa. Mathew Perlot and Elizabeth Haupert, daughter of Michael and Mary Ann Haupert, were married in Granville on February 12, 1896. After their marriage the couple lived on the Perlot homestead for about five years, and then moved to a farm near Adrian, Minnesota. In December, 1905. they moved to Portland, Oregon, and later to a farm on Pete’s Mt. near Oregon City, Oregon.
They have five children, two of whom died in infancy. Olivia married John Hellberg and remained in Oregon. She died August 2. 1979. Viola and Leonard moved with their parents to Kennewick, Washington in 1917, and lived there only a short time when Elizabeth was called to Alton in December, 1918, because of the serious illness and death of her mother, Mary Ann Haupert. Since Michael Haupert was also old and unable to alone, Math and Elizabeth Perlot and their two children, Viola and Leonard moved back to Iowa to take care of him.
Mathew Perlot was a carpenter and with a crew of men built many homes and farm buildings in the Alton area. He passed away October 3, 1954 at the age of 83. Elizabeth Perlot died Nov 19, 1961 at the age of 86.

Elizabeth Haupert born 23 Feb 1875 Sioux County IA. She was the daughter of Michael Haupert 1838-1922 Mary Ann Monner 1846-1919. Mathew and Elizabeth Perlot’s children were as follows.

1. Olivia Perlot born 5 Nov 1897 Alton IA died 2 2Aug 1979 Oregon City, Clackamas County Oregon. She married John H. Hellberg and lived in Oregon. In the 1930 census of Tualatin, Oregon their children were Edward O. Hellberg age 12, Rose Marie Hellberg age 10, Marvin J. Hellbert age 9, Louise E. Hellberg age 5, and Elaine J. Hellbarg age 2. Living with them was Olivia’s brother Leonard F. Perlot age 23. In the 1940 census two more children were added Marjorie Hellberg 8 and Shirley Hellberg 3.
2. Viola Perot born 11 Feb 1904 MN died 13 Dec 1997 Orange City IA. She married O. P. Kettler in 1932. Their children were Bernard of Peoria, IL., John of Shawnee, Kan. and Edward of Annapolis, Md. See the obit of Viola on this web page.
3. Leonard Perlot born 22 Jul 1906 Oregon. He married 1 Jun 1930 at Portland OR to Muriel Simpson . He died Jul 1984 Washington, Oregon. In 1940 census of Portland OR. Their children were Janice M. Perlot age 5, Matthew Perlot age 4 and Mary Anna Perlot age 2. In the 1950 census three more children Leila J. Perlot age 9, Gerald L. Perlot age 7 and Susan J. Perlot age 3 were added to the family.

Mathew is the son of John P. & Margaretha (Theis) Perlot. He was married Elizabeth Haupert on February 12 at St. Joseph Church in Granville, Iowa. Mathew and Elizabeth are the parents of:
Olivia Marie, Odilo M., Viola P., and Leonard,
Pallbearers were Paul Von Arb, George Henrich, Nick Gaul, Chris Schneider, Ed Schlichte and Frank Vortherms. Acolytes were Edward Kettler, Tom Schneider, Jim Gaul and Jim Forkenbrock.
Surviving Mr. Perlot are his wife and three children: 16 grandchildren; one brother, Mr. H. Perlot, Granville, and two sisters: Mrs. Kathryn Nelson and Miss Marguerite Perlot both of Denver, Colorado. Mrs. Elizabeth Perlot, a well loved resident of Alton since 1919, died Saturday, November 18 at the LeMars hospital, where she had been a patient for 15 months. She suffered a stroke Nov. 7 which was the immediate cause of her death. She was 86 years of age.
Elizabeth Haupert was born Feb. 23, 1875 to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Haupert and lived a child in the Granville and Alton vicinity. She was married to Matthew Perlot Feb. 12 at St. Joseph church in Granville.
The couple farmed near Granville for 5 years, then at Adrian, Minn, for several years, moving in 1905 to the far Northwest where they lived in the Portland, Oregon vicinity and at Kennewick, Wash, until 1919. In that year they returned to Sioux County and made their home in Alton. Mr.
Perlot died in 1954.
Surviving are a son, Leonard of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Mrs. John Hellberg of Oregon City. Ore., and Mrs. Otto P. Kettler of Alton; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Ahlers and Mrs. Mary Perlot, both of Granville; l5 grandchildren and 2l great grandchildren. Two sons died in infancy; 1 brother and 2 sisters preceded Mrs. Perlot in death.
Rosaries were recited Sunday evening, Monday afternoon and evening, with funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday from St. Mary's Catholic church, Msgr. Zeno Reising officiating, and interment in the parish cemetery.
Mrs. Perlot was a member of St. Mary's Rosary society, devoted to her family and church and never too busy to take time for a kind deed.
Arriving Tuesday were her sons Leonard and daughter Mrs. Hellberg from Oregon, and, three grandsons including Bernard Kettler, his wife and daughter of Peoria, IL., John Kettler of Madison, Wis. and Edward of Iowa State University, Ames. Relatives from Minnesota and South Dakota were also expected for the rites.*******

Mrs. Margaret Perlot, who recently passed on at her home in Denver, was a pioneer resident of this county and still owns a farm east of Alton. For the past 34 years she had been a resident of Denver. She was 81 years of age. Mrs. Perlot is survived by two sons, Mat. Perlot of Alton, Mike H. of Granville, and two daughters, Miss Margaret Perlot and Mrs. Katherine Butler, both of Denver. The two sons and Mrs. Perlot’s brother, John Theis of Hospers, left by train Thursday to attend the funeral, which was held Saturday morning. Mrs. Perlot came to Sioux county by covered wagon at the age of 16, her parents having been among the first settlers of the county. Her son, Matt Perlot of Alton, is said to have been the first white boy born in the county.RESEARCH NOTES
The 1880 U.S. census shows the Perlot family living in Floyd Township, Sioux County: John, age 44, a farmer, born in Luxemburg; wife Margereth, age 27, also born in Luxemburg; children Mathew (9), Peter (6), Michel (4), and Kate (3), all born in Iowa.
In the 1885 Iowa state census they still live in rural Floyd Township. Their children are Mathias (13), Peter (11), Michael (8), Katherina (7), and Margaret (2). Also living with them is Henry Theis, age 62, widowed, a carpenter.
In 1900 they are living in Denver (although John’s occupation is still farmer): John P. Perlot, age 64, born Sept. 1835 in Germany, married 31 years, immigrated 1866, naturalized; wife Margurett, age 48, born Feb. 1852 in Germany, mother of 6 children, 6 living, immigrated 1855; daughter Catherine, age 21, born Dec. 1878, single, a teacher; daughter Margurete, age 17, born Feb. 1883, at school; son John F., age 15, born April 1885, a salesman in a store; and two female lodgers, Mary E. (age 60) and Mary (age 20) Baumes.
In 1910 John P. (75) and Margaret (58), both born in Germany, are living in Denver with their daughter Marguerite M. (28). John is listed as a farmer, own income, and Marguerite M. as a shirtwaist maker, working at home. Five of John P. and Margaret’s six children are living.
In 1920 Margaret (67), now a widow, born in Luxembourg, native language French, immigrated in 1855 and naturalized in 1893, is living with her daughter Marguerite M. (37). Margaret owns her home. Neither has an occupation. In 1930 they are still living together in Denver.
Further research found that John Peter Perlot was born 3 Sep 1834 Kehlen, Capellen, Luxembourg and died 11 Oct 1912 at Denver CO. He was the son of Michael Perlo/Perlot 1800-1880 and Margaret Poekes 1795-1861. He married Marguerite Theis 1869 at Iowa City, Wright, Iowa.
Marguerite Theis was born 21 Feb 1852 Kehlen, Capellen, Luxembourg and died 21 December 1932 Denver CO. Their children were -
