Source: Alton Democrat issue of 22 July 1911.
Jonh Mulvany passed away at his home in Alton on Sunday July 16th 1911 at 7 P.M. He had suffered for several weeks with stomach ulcers and death came as a relief. Mr. Mulvany was 71 years of age. He was born in Donore, County Meade, Ireland where in 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Rose Rielly. This union was blessed with nine children six of whom are living. In 1864 Mr. and Mrs. Mulvany moved to the United States establishing their first home in the state of Illinois. They came to Sioux county about twenty five years ago and moved onto a farm half way between Alton and Granville where they resided until two years ago when they left the farm to take life easy and occupied one of Alton's most comfortable homes. Mr. Mulvany was a very popular character. He had a cheerful word for everyone and his straight and honest business methods demanded the respect of his fellowmen. He had been successful on the farm and expected to enjoy the fruits of his labor when he moved to town. This was granted him for only two short years when he was taken away leaving a broken hearted family and many mourning friends. The deceased is survived by his wife and six children--Mrs. May Sauer of Alton, James of Marcus, Wm. of Granville, Mrs. John J. Scheckel and Misses Emma and Lilian Mulvany of Alton. He is also survived by two brothers and four sisters residing in Ireland. The funeral services were held on Wednesday from St. Mary's Catholic church of which deceased was a devout member and were conducted by Very Rev. F.J. Brune. The funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed in Alton, about fifty attending the funeral from Granville. Others that came from a distance are:
Jake Knorr, Mrs. M. Schaefer, Mrs. M. Sauer, John Sullivan, Anna Donahue and John Tonsfeldt of Le Mars Iowa: Julius Schroeder of Bridgewater South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Thom. Barry and son Wm. of Iowa City Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Schnepf of Oyens Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Jos.
