Minten, Bernard 1834-1901 & Elizabeth Holzen Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church of 1883-1983. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Society. Some research notes have been added. Names, places and dates were left as recorded in the cited source.

Bernard Minten was born May 17, 1834 in Germany He came to America with his parents in 1845. Elizabeth Holzen was born July 4, 1837 in Germany. She came to America with her parents, settling in Fussville, Wis.

Bernard Minten married Elizabeth Holzen on May 27, 1857 in Wisconsin. They settled on a farm near Waukesha County, Wis. In 1887 they came west and settled in Sioux County near Alton. In 1893 they retired to Alton. Mr. Minten died in 1901, and Mrs. Minten in 1905.

Their children were all born in Fussville, Wisconsin, and included Anton, Bernard Jr., Theresa, Margaret, and Frank, in addition to those who remained in the Alton area. These were John, married to Anna Reith; Matt married to Magdalena Gehlen; Jacob Married to Margaret List; Wm. Married to Clara Reith; Chris and Henry who lived in Alton until 1901.

1880 Census of Menomenee, Waukesha, WI Bernard Minten was 47, born abt 1833 Germany, his wife was Elizabeth Minten age 44 born1836 Germany. Children were Henry W. Minten 22, Bernard Minten 19, Christian Minten 17, Margaret Minten 14, John Minten 12, Matthias Minten 10, Jacob Minten 9, William Minten 6, Frank Minten 5. (note – Anthony had died in WI)

Bernard Joseph Minten was born 17 May 1834 Prussia and died 19 Mar 1901 Alton Iowa. His parents were Franz Wilhelm Minten 1790-1853 and Maria Agnes Sturm 1791-1863. Bernard married Anna Elizabeth Holsem 27 May 1857 Fussville, Waukesha WI.

Ann Elizabeth Holzem was born 4 Jul 1836 Ollheim, Rheinland, Prussia and died 12 July 1905 Alton IA.

1. Henry Minten born 13 Mar 1858 Fussville, WI died 10 Jun 1898 Alton IA. See his obituary on this web page. He married Elizabeth Brill. He was in the hardware business. Their children were- Esther, Clara, Mary, Bernard J., Margeret, Eulalia and Julianna. Bernard, Margaret and Eulailia died as infants. After the death of Mr. Minten, the family moved to St. Paul MN. Dauther, Clara died 1982 at 98, and is buried in St. Mary’s at Alton.

2. Anton Minten born 9 Jun 1859 Fussville, WI died as a youth on 19 Jul 1878 Fussville WI.

3. Bernard Joseph Minten born 28 Feb 1861 Menomee, WI died 3 Mar 1931 Marion OR. He married Anna Rosa Minten 1870-1952. Their children were – Aggie 1892-1972, Anthony 1894-1959, Henry 1896-1951, Clara 1901-1919, Leander 1905-1962, Raymond 1908-1991, Caroline 1910-1998

5. Margaret Minten, born 9 Feb 1866 WI died 6 Jan 1945 San Francisco CA. Her husband was Joseph Hildeshein married 26 May 1891 Sioux County IA. Find A Grave lists children as – William Roman Hildeshein, Isabell E. Highberger, Odilo M. Hildeshein, and Raymond John Hildeshein.

6. John Minten born 4 Nov 1868 Fussville WI. And died April 9, 1943 Alton IA. He married Anna M. Reith of Fussville WI. They had no children. They retired in Alton. See his obit on this web page

8. Jacob Minten born 1 Jan 1871 Fussville WI He married Margaret List and their children were – Leo, Vincent, Helen, Marcella and Betty. In 1929 the family sold their farm east of town and moved to Los Angeles CA.

9. William Minten 3 Jun 1873 Fussville, WI died 16 Apr 1923 Alton IA. He married Clara Reith 1878-1961. They had eight children. Theresa Mrs. Greg Pick, Melinda Mrs. Richard Duits, Margaret died in infancy, Elenaor Mrs. Lawrence Ruppert , Bernice Mrs. Le Roy Trienen, Julie Mrs. Clarence Langel, and Robert 1920-2001.

10. Frank Minten born 6 Feb 1875 Waukesha Co. WI He died 24 Jul 1945 WI. He was of Richfield WI in 1905 His wife was Clara Anna Wick 1882-1974. Two children listed were – Frank Christ Minten 1905-1987 and Anton J. Minten 1907-1969.

OBITUARY of Bernard Minten 1834-1901
Source: Sioux County Herald (3-20-1901) Birth: May 17, 1834 Died: March 19, 1901 Bernard Minton, Sr., one of Alton's most wealthiest and best known residents in this section, died at his home at the age of 66. Born near Cologne on the Rhine in 1834, he came to America with his parents in 1854 and grew to manhood near Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In 1853 with Joseph Umhoefer and five others he went to the gold fields of Australia but returned in nine months after many hardships. In 1856 he married Miss Elizabeth Holzem. He came to Alton with his family in 1887. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Minten: Henry W., Christian, Bernard, Margie, Anthony, John, Matt, Will, Jake, and Frank, nine of whom survive. (Note) He grew up in Fussville (Menomonee Falls) Waukesha County, Wisconsin.

OBITUARY of Elizabeth Mrs. Bernard Minten
From Alton Democrat of July 15, 1905 Died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Joe Hildesheim Wednesday morning at two o'clock Mrs. Bernard Minten. She had been a patient sufferer for many months and death came as a relief. Mrs. Minten was born in Nederdress Germany and was sixty nine years of age on July fourth. Her maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Holzem and on May 27, 1857 she was untied in marriage to Bernard Minten.
The family have lived in Alton and vicinity for a number of years having come to Sioux County in 1887. The funeral services were held from St. Mary's church Friday morning at nine o'clock of which deceased was a devout member. The services were largely attended and the remains were laid to rest by the side of those of her husband who passed away four years ago last March.
The children who survive her are Mrs. Joe Hildesheim, John, Matt, Jake and William Minten of Alton and Frank Minten of Richfield WI, Chris Minten of Milwaukee and Bernard Minten of Stayton Oregon. The sympathy of the entire community go out to the bereaved children in their hour of sorrow.
