Koch, Joseph 1862-1924 & Elizabeth Schneider Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added. Spelling, dates and places were left as found in the cited source, example, there is some confusion as to the country of origin being Alsace Lorraine which is in France or Germany.

Joseph Koch was born at Alsace Lorraine in 1862; died Dec 15, 1924 at Alton Iowa. He married Elizabeth Schneider, born July 2, 1864 at Blisbrucken, Lothringen, Germany died March 10 1906 at Alton Iowa. They were married in Germany, where three children were born.

JOSEPHINE was born Jun 12, 1887, died April 9, 1956 at Granville, Iowa. She married Herman Ahlers May 13, 1913. They farmed south of Granville, and had eleven children.
PETER was born April 19, 1889 in Germany, died Nov. 22, 1975 at Le Mars, Iowa, buried at Alton. He remained single, and farmed at Ghent, Minnesota a few years, then moved to Martinez, California, where he worked in the oil fields until he retired. He then came to Le Mars to live with his sister Rita, and helped her care for her invalid husband.
PAUL was born in Germany, died when he was about 18 months old, and is buried in Germany.

The family then came to the United States and settled in Alton, Iowa where Joseph Koch worked in the mill. The following children were born here.

LEONA, born Dec 25, 1893 and died Dec 1. 1953. She married Bennett Sanford. They lived at Eagle Grove for a few years, then moved to Fort Dodge. They had one son who died at 1 ˝ years of age.
JOHN was born July 7, 1895 and married Ann Sanders April 14, 1926. They farmed at Minneota, Minnesota and have six children.
NICK was born 1898 and died in 1941. He worked in a shoe repair shop. He is buried at Alton.
OTTO was born March 1, 1900 and died March 21, 1954 at Martinez, California. He worked in the oil fields and remained single.
JOSEPH was born Sept 28, 1902 and died Nov 23, 1955 at Marshall Minnesota. He married Kathryn Dirik and had seven children. He worked in an elevator.
RITA was born Nov. 23, 1906. She married Peter Wiltgen Sept 10, 1928. he was a funeral director at Le mars, Iowa. They had no children.

Jospeh Koch born 4 May 1861 Saarensmingen, Lorriane, France died 15 Dec 1924 Alton IA. He was the son of Jean Nicolas Koch 1829-1860 and Catherine Eidesheim 1832-1910. In 1886 Joseph married Marie Elizabeth Schneider.

Marie Elizabeth Schneider was born 2 July 1863 Bliedbruck, Moselle, Lorraine, France and died 1 March 1906 Alton, IA. Her parents were Jean Nicolas Schneider 1826-1886 and Claire Stern 1828-1867. Joseph and Elizabeth were the parents of nine children as follows:

1. Josephine Koch born 12 Jun 1887 Seabrucken, Germany died 9 Apr 1856 Sioux County IA. She married Herm Ahlers May 13, 1913. Their children -  Herman, Vincent and Clarence of Remsen; Arnold, Bernard, Urban, Raymond and Edward of Granville; 2 daughters: Mrs. Reynold Theisen of Remsen and Clara of Granville, and daughter Helen. 2. Peter Koch born 19 Apr 1889 Moselle, Lorraine France died Nov 1975 Le Mars, Iowa, buried in St. Mary’s cemetery at Alton IA. He farmed in Minnesota for several years before moving to California in 1926. He was employed as a field superintendent for Shell Oil Co. until his retirement in 1955 when he moved to Le Mars. He did not marry.
3. Jean ‘Paul’ Koch born 5 Jan 1891 Bliesbruck, Moselle, Lorraine, France and died 3 Apr 1892 Moselle, Lorraine, France.
4. Leona Koch born 25 Dec 1893 Sarreinsming, Moselle, Lorraine, France and died 1 Dec 1953 Fort Dodge IA . She married Bennett Sanford at Webster IA 6 Dec 1916 . They lived at Eagle Grove for a few years, then moved to Fort Dodge. They had one son who died at 1 ˝ years of age.
5. John Paul Koch born 7 Jul 1895 Alton IA died 17 Mar 1989 Mankato, Blue Earth County, MN. He married Ann Cecella Sanders 1906-2002. The ancestry.com report lists three children all of whom were listed as private.
6. Nicholas Koch 7 Jan 1898 Alton IA died 14 Oct1941 Sioux City IA, buried St Mary’s Cemetery Alton IA. He was single, and worked as a shoe repairman in Alton and Sioux City. See his obituary on this web page.
7. Otto Adolph Koch born 1 Mar 1900 Alton IA and died 2 Mar 1954 Contra Costa CA. He was not married. Worked for oil Company at Martiez, CA. See his obituary on this web page.
8. Joseph Peter Koch born 28 Aut 1902 Alton IA. Died 23 Nov 1955 Worthington, MN. He was married to Katherine M. Dirckx 1905-1937. According to the ancestry.com report they were the parents of children – Eloi 1924-1954, Edward Theodore 1926-1976, Maureen 1936-1967, Richard 1937-1964 and three other children listed as private.
9. Rita E. Koch born 23 Nov 1904 Alton IA died 14 Aug 1993 Le Mars IA. She married Peter N. Wiltgen on 10 Apr 1928 at Alton IA. Her obituary was carried in the Le Mars Daily Sentinel of Aug 10, 1993. She was a nurse . She and her husband operated Wiltgen Funeral Home in Le Mars. He died Nov 10, 1957. They had no children.

Long time Resident Died Monday at Home of Daughter at Granville.
Joseph Koch. for 31 years a resident of Alton passed away Monday Dec. 15, at the home of his daughter. Mrs. Herman Ahlers. He had been troubled for several years with cancer and some months ago after an operation at Le Mars, he left his home here to stay with his daughter who lived four miles south of Granville. He had been confined to his bed about five weeks previous to his death, which came in his 62nd year. . The many friends here were grieved to hear of his passing and will miss the familiar voice and face of, their old-time friend.
Joseph Koch was born in 1862 in Alsace Loraine, He was married about at about 38 years ago to Miss Elizabeth Schneider Seven years later with their family of little children the couple came to the United States, settling at Alton. Eighteen years ago Mrs. Koch passed away, leaving the father with a family of eight children to rear.
The children have since grown up to be a comfort to their father in his last years. The eldest is Mrs. Herman Ahlers of Granville, Peter, Adolph? and Joe are farming near _____, Mrs Bennett Sanford lived at Eagle Grove, Nick and Otto at home in Alton and the youngest, Miss Rita is in training as a nurse at the Le Mars Hospital.

The funeral was held Wednesday morning Dec. 17th at St. Mary's church here, with services in charge of Very Rev. F. J. Brune. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery. Pallbearers were-. the two sons and Joe Schneider- of Fulda Minn. Besides the last named, others here for the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Schwartz and daughter Viola of Des Moines. A number of Granviile friends were also here

OBITUARY of Elizabeth Mrs. Joseph Koch

From the Alton Democrat of March 17, 1906 Mrs. Joseph Koch died Saturday evening about four O'clock at her home at the north end of Third Ave. She had been bedfast for several weeks and in bad health for about a year. She was born Elizabeth Schneider in Lorraine Germany July 2 1864 and in June 1886 was married to Joseph Koch.
They came to Alton in December of 1893. She leaves a husband and eight children the eldest a girl of seventeen and the youngest a babe of eighteen months. She was a relative of John and Jacob and Nic Schneider of Alton. The funeral occurred Monday from St. Mary's church of which she was a loyal member. The family has the sympathy of all in their hour of bereavement.
