DeJager, William H. 1881-1935 & Anna Langerack family

This story was taken from pages 310-311 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Spellings were left as found in the cited source.

Mr. William H. De Jager and Anna Langerack were united in marriage in the year of our Lord March 7, 1906, at Maurice, Iowa, at 7:00 P.M. Ben Heusinkveld and Mary Vander Stoep of Maurice, Iowa, as witnesses, and Rev. Ihrman as clergyman.

Two children were born to this marriage. In 1909, April 4, a daughter Elnora, in 1916, August 4, a daughter Gladys.

William and Anna lived on Hessel De Jager’s farm at Orange City, for three years which is next to Harold De Jager’s farm. They then moved to Eliza Langerack’s farm which is where Leon Kuiken lives now at Maurice, Iowa. They then moved to their own farm ½ mile north of where they were living.

This farm was bought from John Peuse. They lived there until William De Jager passed away on April 9, 1935, from an appendectomy surgery. He was 53 years old.

Mrs. Anna De Jager lived one year on the farm with added help from Mr. Everet Peuse and brothers of her husband William and nephew Harry Kroeze from Orange City, Iowa.

She then moved to Maurice, Iowa, and bought a home from Mrs. Henry De Jong and lived there 46 years until she was 94 years old. Then she spent two years living with her daughters, and four and ⅔ years in Sioux Center nursing wing until her death on February 5, 1988, at the age of one hundred years, eight months and nine days. Her family thanks the Lord for her clarity of mind all these years.

William served as a member in the church consistory for many years, and William and Anna were members of the First Reformed Church of Maurice, Iowa, all their married lives.

William H. De Jager was born 19 Apr 1881 Sherman Twp. Sioux County IA and died 9 Apr 1935 Orange City IA. His parents were Hessel Pieter De Jager 1884-1891 and Gijsje Evertje Vellenga 1844-1926. Anna Langeraak was born 27 May 1887 Maurice IA died 5 Feb 1988 Maurice IA. Her parents were Cornelius Langeraak 1856-1903 and Eliza Smith 1865-1960. William and Anna had two children as follows:

2. Gladys Mariette De Jager born 4 Aug 1916 Maurice IA died 15 Dec 2010 Orange City IA. She married Jake Hoekstra 1939 at Maurice. He died 1972. On Aug 1977 she married Alvin Mulder in Maurice. Children - Russ and Sharon Hoekstra, of Bellflower, California; Harold and Gladys Hoekstra, of Orange City; Glenda and John Van Veldhuizen, of Sioux City; Larry and Gloria Hoekstra, of Orange City; Marlene and Gary Heerde, of Sheldon; and Randy and Ruth Hoekstra, of Maurice. OBITUARY OF WILLIAM DE JAGER 1881-1935
Sioux Center News April 18, 1935 Born:4-19-1881 Died: 4-9-1935
Will DeJager, well known Maurice farmer, died Tuesday morning, April 9th, at an Orange City hospital following an operation for appendicitis the preceding Saturday. Funeral services were held last Thursday and interment was made at Orange City.
Mr. DeJager was born near Orange City April 19, 1881. In 1909 he married Anna Langerack of Maurice and two daughters were born to this union. Besides his immediate family he is survived by five brothers, Peter of Ireton; Edwin, Martin and Ring of Orange City, and Andrew.

OBITUARY OF ANNA DE JAGER
Siouxland Press February 11, 1988 Born: 5-27-1887 Died: 2-5-1988
Mrs. Anna De Jager, 100, of Maurice, passed away Friday, February 5, at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 9, at the First Reformed Church of Maurice with the Revs. Kenneth Westrate and Gerrit Docter officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
Anna was born May 27, 1887 on a farm 1 1/2 miles northeast of Maurice, the daughter of Cornelius Langerack and Eliza Smits Langerack. In 1905, she married William H. De Jager at Maurice. They made their home on the De Jager farm until 1908, when they moved to the Langerack farm at Maurice. Later they moved to their own farm 1/2 mile farther north. Mr. De Jager passed away April 9, 1935 at Orange City. In 1936 Mrs. De Jager moved into Maurice. She lived in her own home until 1982 when she lived with her daughters. In 1984 she became a resident of the nursing home.
Survivors include her two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Elnora) McGilvra or Maurice; and Mrs. Alvin (Gladys) Mulder of Orange City; six grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Mrs. Cora Crowley of LeMars, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, three brothers, and one sister.
