Huss, Anton 1843-1923 and Anna Kaiser Nemmers Family

This family story is from the Alton St. Mary’s Church Book of 1883-1983 page (not numbered). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added. Spellings were left as found in the cited source.

Anton Huss Family – Anton was born in Luxemburg on August 16, 1843. He married Anna Kaiser Nemmers, the widow of Nicholas Nemmers, in 1884 and lived on the Nemmers farm East of Alton with Anna and her five living children. Anna was born in Luxemburg on Dec 15, 1852 , and was the daughter of Hubert and Babara Ehlinger Kaiser. She came to Northwest Iowa after her marriage to Nicholas D. Nemmers and remained on the farm after his death in 1881.

Four sons were born to Anton and Anna: Theodore, Nicholas, Joseph and Mathias. Theodore Huss married Anna Klein and they had ten children. He died Dec. 9, 1974. Nicholas was unmarried and died on April 11, 1973. Joseph married Margaret Tremmel from Ashton and they had two children. He passed away on April 1, 1967. Mathias Huss wed Alyce Silver and they had two children. Mathias died May 14, 1970.

Anna Nemmers Huss died on Jan 28, 1920. Services were At St. Mary’s with burial at Le Mars. After her death Anton moved to Faulkton, South Dakota and lived with his son, Theodore. He died there on May 1, 1923, and was buried at Le Mars.

1885 Census of East Orange Twp Sioux County lists Anton Huss age 39 born about 1846 Germany, Anna 33, Peter Nemmers 11, Hubert Nemmers 9, Josephine Nemmers 7, Apolonia Nemmers 4, Katy Nemmers 2, Theo Huss 0.

1900 census of East Orange Twp Sioux County lists Anton Huss born Aug 1843 Germany, immigrated in 1865, married 1884, a farmer, Anna 48, Theo 15, Nick 13, Peter J. 11, Mathias 9, Katherine Nemmers 17 step daughter.

Marriage record of Anton Huss age 39 born Germany, parents John Huss and Miss Ulfiling, first marriage for Anton. Married Annie Nemmers, nee Anna Kaiser of Alton IA, age 30 Years daughter of Hubert and Babara Ehlinger, dated Sep 24. 1883 Plymouth County by Rev. U Gecy.

They had children – Hildegard Nemmers Gloden 1899-1960, Leonard Mathew Nemmers 1900-1976, Christina Nemmers Schuver 1902-1982, Arnold Nemmers 1905-1989, Florence Nemmers Liepold 1908 – 2003, Florian Nemmers 1908-1963, Raymond Nemmers 1910-1990, Loretta Nemmers Lehnhoff 1912-1982, Rosella Nemmers 1916-1986, Viola Nemmers Jones 1917-1982.

2. Hubert Joseph Nemmers born 27 Oct 1875 Alton IA married 11 Jan 1909 Le Mars IA died Jul 1966 buried Mitchell SD . He married Mary Catherine Hoffmann 1880-1968 Children: Felicitas Anna Nemmers 1909, Mildred C. Nemmers 1911, Elizabeth Marie Nemmers 1914-2005, and Rosa Agnes Nemmers 1916-2006.

3. Josephine Nemmers born 25 May 1877 Sioux County IA died 15 Jun 1918 Le Mars, IA. She married Henry Kokenge. Children : Joseph Kokenge 1899, Dorothy Kokenge 1900-1966, Francis Kokenge 1901-1996, Alfred Kokenge 1904-1971, Irene Kokenge 1906-1917, Alois Kokenge 1909-1984, Cyril Kokenge 1911-1992, Edna Kokenge 1913, Maureen Kokenge 1915-2006 and Emmet Kokenge 1917-1917. 4. Abigail Appolonia Nemmers born 1880 East Orange Sioux IA died 9 Apr 1938 Woodstock MN. She married Bernard Peter Demuth. 5. Katherine Cecelia Nemmers born 16 Oct 1882 East Orange Twp Sioux County IA died 7 Feb 1953 Slayton MN. She married 4 May 1915 to Nick Welter. They had children – Leo Peter Welter 1917-1917, Clarence Fredrick Welter 1918 and Cyril Bernard Welter 1920-2011.

1. Theodore Huss born 4 Nov 1884 Sioux County IA Married 24 Feb 1908 to Anna Klein died 9 Dec 1874 Faulkton, SD. Children – Marcella Mary Huss 1909-1998, Irene Huss 1912, Clarence Huss 1913 , Leo Huss 1916, Cyril John Huss 1918-1995, Verna Huss 1921 and three others not named.

2. Joseph Peter Huss born 27 Aug 1888 Alton IA 1889 died 11 Apr 1967 Ashton IA. He married Margaret Mary Tremmel 1894-1963. One child named Cecil John Huss 1919-2013 and one other not named.

3. Nick Huss born abt 1888 unmarried died on April 11, 1973

4. Mathias Theodore Huss born 22 Apr 1891 died 14 May 1970 Fairmont MN. She married Alice Silver 1898-1979. They were the parents of two named children – John Mathew Huss 1926-2017 and Bridget Ann Huss Mahoney 1930-2018.

Pioneer Resident Passes on.
Mrs. Anna Huss a pioneer resident of Alton Passed away suddenly at 12:30 a.m. Jan 28th from heart failure at the age of 67 years. Mrs. Huss was enroute home from Minneapolis, where she had gone for medical treatment, and died on the train just before reaching Mankato.
Mrs. Huss homesteaded in Sioux county in 1873 and is on of the earliest pioneers of this section. Her family has the sympathy of the entire community in their loss.
Mrs. Huss was born in Luxemburg on Dec. 25th 1842 and came to the USA at the age of 14. In 1873 she married to N. D. Nemmers at St. Donatus IA, and the couple took up a homestead near Alton. Six children were born to them. Of these, one died in infancy a son Peter Nemmers, died two years ago and the oldest daughter, Mrs. H. Kokenge, passed away in June 1918. Mr. Nemmers died in 1882 at Alton and was buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery Le Mars.
In Sept 1884 Mrs. Nemmers was married to Anton Huss. Mrs. Huss is survived by seven children: Hubert Nemmers, Miranda SD: Mrs. Demuth Lismore MN; Mrs. N. Welter Woodstock MN; Theo Huss, Faulkton SD; Joe Huss Aston IA; Nick and Matt Huss of Alton; and by one sister Mrs. Mat Kemp of Le Mars. Mrs. Huss lived on the original homestead until two years ago when she came to town.
Funeral services will be held in Alton At St. Mary’s church at 8.30 Saturday Morning and interment will be in Le Mars at St. Joseph’s cemetery. Also: See obit of her husband Nicholas Nemmers 1845-1882.

OBITUARY of Anton Hess 1843-1923
Le Mars Semi Weekly Sentinel May 4, 1923 Anton Huss Was An Early Settler Near Alton. The body of Anton huss was brought here for interment last evening and the funeral will be held this morning at St. Joseph Church. Mr. Huss was 78 years old and was a former resident of Alton. He died at the home of a son near Faulkton SD, where he had lived for the past several years. His wife is buried in the St. Joseph’s cemetery in this city.
Le Mars Globe Post of May 3rd, 1923 Funeral of Anton Huss Will be held from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Friday. Anton huss 76 died a Faulton SD. Tuesday night. The funeral will be held from St. Joseph’s Catholic church Friday, at 9:30 o’clock, and the body will be interred in the Catholic Cemetery. The Deceased is survived by four sons, Ted. And Nic, living at Faulkton, Joe at Ashton IA and Math at Brewster MN. Three step children Kate, Abbie and Hubert Nemmers live at Faulkton. Mr. Huss was born in Luxemburg and emigrated to this country when young, settling near Alton. He was married to mrs. Nemmers, a widow, sister of Mrs. Matt Kemp of Le Mars. They lived in Alton and later moved to SD, which has been their permanent home Mrs. Huss died Jan 28, 1920. Deceased was well known among the older people around Le Mars and Remsen and those in the eastern part of Sioux County.
