Herrig, Mathias ‘Matt’ 1862-1933 and Mary Ann Koob family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983 page 159. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added. Spellings, dates and places were submitted as found in the noted source.

Matt Herring was born in Dubuque County Iowa on August 7, 1862. He married Mary Ann Koob on Oct 23, 1889. Mary Ann was also born in Dubuque County Iowa on May 3rd 1868.

They moved to the Alton vicinity in 1890. They farmed until 1927 northeast of Alton at which time they purchased the Judge Hutchinson residence and lived there until their death in March 1933 just one month apart.

To this union four children were born; Mary, Anna, Mike and Martha. Mary married Nick Harens of Hospers, Iowa. They have two sons, Robert now living in Worthington MN, and Nicholas who died while in the service in North Africa. Mary’s husband, Nick died in 1918 during the flu epidemic at St. Kilian, MN. Mary remarried in 1934 to John Reeff of Alton Iowa. She passed away in 1974 at Alton, Iowa.

Anna married Ernest Heying of Hospers, Iowa. They had 4 children; Norbert, Mary Ann, Clarement, and Luella. The lived at Winner, SD, for awhile and they moved to Boise, Idaho. Ann passed away about 1960.

Mike married Ida Wathier of Alton and they lived in this vicinity. Mike passed away in 1967.
Martha Married Al Jonas of Alton. To this union 3 Children were born; Clairene, Virjean and Matthew. They farmed in the Ashton, Iowa area. Clairene is married to Verlyn Mayer and lives at Farmington, Minn. Virjean is married to Max Powers and lives at Coquille, Oregon. Matthew was killed in a car accident. Martha passed away in 1978.

Matthew ‘Mathias’ Herrig was born 7 Aug 1862 Prairie Springs Twp. Jackson, Iowa died 31 Mar 1933 Alton, Sioux, Iowa. He was the son of William Herrig 1831-1919 and Catherine Nemmers 1841-1919. He married Mary Ann Koob 23 Oct 1889 at St. Donatus, Jackson IA.

Mary Ann Koob was born 3 May 1868 St. Donatus, Jackson Iowa and died 3 Mar 1933 Alton, Iowa. Her parents were Peter Koob 1831-1904 and Elisabetha Anna Aren 1840-1886. Mathias and Mary Ann’s children as follows:

CHILDREN: In the church book story it was reported they had four children however the report on ancestry.com lists more. In Mary Herrig’s obit it states seven children were born and three had died in infancy.

3. Anna Catherine Herrig born Jan 1894 East Orange, Sioux Iowa died 19 Jul 1953 Boise Idaho. She married Ernest Henry Heying 1894-1978. They had children Norbert J. Heying 1916 – 1978, Mary A. Heying 1918, Clarimont Heying 1920-1976 and one other child not named.

4. Elizabeth Herrig born 1895 Hospers Sioux, IA died 1895 Hospers, Sioux, IA

5. Michael J. Herrig born 28 Feb 1897 Alton, Sioux, IA died 5 Aug 1966 Alton, Sioux, IA. He married Ida Wathier 1901-1949.

6. Nicholas Herrig born 1898 Hospers, Sioux, IA abt died 1900 Hospers, Sioux, Iowa

7. Martha Elizabeth Herrig born 21 May 1900 Hospers, IA died 5 Nov 1978 Farmington, Dakota, MN. Buried St.Mary’s Ashton IA, married 19 Jan 1925 Alton IA to Aloysius Jonas. Children listed on ‘Find a Grave’ were Matthew Joseph Jonas, Jean Clara Powers, Clairene Mary Meyer, James Jonas and Joseph Jonas.

MATHIAS HERRIG PASSES--JUST FOUR WEEKS AFTER WIFE Mathias Herrig, well known retired farmer of Alton and an early resident of the community, died at his home on Friday, four weeks to a day after the death of his wife, the late Mrs. Mary Ann Herrig. He had not been well for some years and was confined to bed for six weeks before he quietly passed away on to join his life mate.
Mr. Herrig was 70 years of age last August, having been born in Dubuque, Iowa, August 7, 1862. He was married at St. Donatus, Iowa, to Mary Ann Koob on October 23, 1889, in March 1899 the couple came to the Alton vicinity. For 33 years they lived on their farm northeast of town, retiring from farm life 6 years ago, when they purchased a home in Alton. Although both have had ill health since they left the farm, they enjoyed their town life and friends. Mr. Herrig was a man of social able and kindly disposition and of highest integrity, and he will be missed by hundreds of friends.
Surviving Mr. Herrig are his children, four of whom are now living, three having died in infancy; five brothers and four sisters, and eight grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Mary Harens and Mike Herrig, Alton; Mrs. Ernest Heying, Crookston, Nebraska; Mrs. M. Jonas, Ashton.
Very Reverend M.A. Schemel of St. Mary’s Catholic Church was in charge of funeral services Monday morning and interment took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery. A large number of relatives and friends, most of whom were also present at Mrs. Herrig’s funeral, came to pay their last tribute. Although several of Mr. Herrig’s brothers and other relatives living in eastern Iowa were not able to come on account of the floods in that section, more than one hundred relatives were present at the services. Among them were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herrig and children, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Herrig and family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koob, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Koob, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nemmers, son and daughter of Fulda, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Demuth and son of Fulda, Minnesota; Messrs. and Mesdames John Miller, John Theis and John Koob, Hawarden; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Umhoefer, Mrs. Jake Wagner, Mrs. Lou Winchel, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Huss of Ashton; Messrs. And Mesdames Henry Kellen, John Gloden, Arnold Nemmers, Tony Schuver, N.H. Plathe and Mike Harens, all of Granville; Mrs. Math. Hoffman and son, Mr. and Mrs. Will Klein, Mrs. Nick Becker of Hospers; Miss Mary Herrig and Mrs. John Muenster of Dubuque; Mrs. Peter Nemmers, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Wiltgen and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Nemmers, Mrs. Tony Reuter, Al Nemmers, all of Le Mars. Callers Sunday were Joe Nemmers and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Schweimch, of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; Mrs. Jim Traufleg and Mrs. Jockes, Le Mars; Mr. and Mrs. Matt Beuiner, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Beulner of Remsen, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gaul of Granville.

WAS NATIVE OF DUBUQUE COUNTY--DEATH CALLS ALTON MOTHER, MRS. MATHIAS HERRIG
Mrs. Mathias Herrig, a resident of this community since 1890, died at her home in Alton Friday night at nine o’clock. She was confined to bed for six weeks before her passing and for several years had not been in good health. Mrs. Herrig was 63 years of age.
Mary Ann Koob was born May 3, 1868, in Dubuque County, Iowa. She was married at St. Douatus on October 23, 1889, to Mathias Herrig. To this union seven children were born, of whom three died in infancy. The four children living are Mrs. Mary Harens and Mike Herrig, Alton; Mrs. Ernest Heying (Anna), Crookston, Nebraska; Mrs. Al Jonas (Martha), Ashton. Besides her husband and children, she is survived by eight grandchildren and by one brother, Henry Koob, of Iona, Minnesota.
On March 20, 1890, Mr. and Mrs. Herrig moved to Alton and settled on a farm east of town, where they lived until 33 years ago. At that time they bought a farm northeast of Alton, making their home there for twenty seven years. Six years ago they retired from farm life and bought a comfortable home in Alton where they have since lived. Always devoted to her family, Mrs. Herrig nevertheless was one who found time for many neighborly acts of kindness, and she was loved by all who knew her.
Mr. Herrig is confined to bed with illness and was unable to attend the funeral.
Funeral services at nine o’clock Tuesday morning were at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of which Mrs. Herrig was a faithful member and were in charge of Very Reverend M.A. Schemel. Over one hundred relatives and a large number of friends attended the services. Among the relatives here from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Muenster, Mrs. John Muenster of Dubuque; Messrs. George Herrig, John Herrig, Nick Herrig and son Raymond of St. Donatus, Iowa; Mrs. and Mrs. Charles Herrig and family, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Herrig and son Hubert, daughter Celia; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koob, Mr. Martin Koob, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ehiringer, all of Iona, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Reying, Crookston, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Al Jonas, Ashton; Mr. Charles Sollinger, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Shares and daughters, Ida and Dorothy, Miss Mary Herrig of Waterloo; Mrs. Peter Nemmers, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Wiltgen and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Reuter, Mrs. Margaret Teutinger, Mr. and Mrs. John Nemmers and family, Le Mars; Mrs. Bert De Much, son and daughter, Woodstock, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Mat Huss, Fairmont, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. John Mueller, Mr. and Mrs. John Theis, Mr. John Seifert, Mr. John Koob, Hawarden; Mr. and Mrs. Will Klein, Mr. and Mrs. John Becker, John, Al and Emins Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. John Gloden, Hospers; Mr. and Mrs. N.H. Plathe, Granville; Messrs and Mesdames Mike Harens and Barney Koob were Granville friends here, besides many other friends from neighboring towns.
