For over 40 years, they rose before dawn, ensuring that Mickel’s doors opened every day at 5:30 a.m., 364 days a year. The restaurant was the site of countless memories, with two round tables always set aside for regular customers: one for older men and another for women, where daily conversations and camaraderie were shared. It was at these tables where many stories were exchanged, and it became clear that Mickel’s was not just a restaurant but a community institution. It became a second home for many and a central gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Mickel's Restaurant closed its doors in January 2013 after over 60 years of serving the Harlan community

Hobbies/Interests: Sue’s selflessness earned her the honor of Citizen of the Year, as she dedicated herself to improving the lives of those around her. She was the heart behind the Youth Center in Harlan, creating a space for teenagers to gather, play games, and enjoy dances. She also organized community-wide Halloween celebrations at the Veterans Auditorium, bringing joy to families each year.
